Situation under surveillance: suspected case of avian influenza at Pécrot pond
...
Updated one day ago
Alderman for the Environment, Amandine De Greef, was contacted Monday evening following the deaths of several Canada geese and a swan at the Pécrot pond, located on Rue Georges Pensis.
The Department of Nature and Forests (DNF) was immediately alerted and visited the site Wednesday morning.
Analyses are currently underway to determine the exact cause of death.
At this stage, the most likely hypothesis is avian influenza, which has been present in Walloon Brabant since the end of 2025.
Authorities have not yet received official confirmation.
Residents living near the pond were notified by mail on Friday, January 16.
Access to the Pécrot pond has been temporarily prohibited by local authorities.
Preventive measures to follow:
• Do not enter the closed area of the Pécrot pond.
• Do not touch the birds (alive or dead).
• Thoroughly clean your shoes after walking nearby.
• Do not collect feathers or carcasses.
Poultry owners are advised, where possible, to:
• Confine or protect your poultry from wild birds. • Feed and water them under cover. • Regularly disinfect equipment. • Wash your hands after handling. • Monitor the health of your birds and report any abnormal mortality.
