Flanders: more than 400 birds found dead in a nature reserve

Nearly 400 birds, mainly black-headed gulls, have been found dead in the past two weeks in the Groot Molsbroek nature reserve in Lokeren, East Flanders. “According to the Afsca, their death was caused by the H5N1 type of avian flu, which is very deadly for birds”, explains the assistant curator of the site Joris Everaert.

Black-headed gulls are the main victims, but Mediterranean gulls, black-necked grebes, coots, mallards and carrion crows have also been victims. “We estimate that 15% of the breeding population of black-headed gulls is already dead and this is unfortunately expected to increase further. We hope that the impact on rarer species of birds such as black-necked grebes will be more limited. But with three of them already dead out of a total population of around 20 grebes, this is not reassuring", worries the ASBL Durme, responsible for the protection of the environment around the Durme, the canal of Moervaart and the Scheldt.

On April 14, it was decided to remove all dead or diseased birds after a significant number of dead black-headed gulls were discovered along the boardwalk around the reserve two days earlier. “The workers of the ASBL Durme had to go to the marsh with a few kayaks and the personal protection necessary to undertake this action. With a highly contagious avian flu, it is important to try to prevent any future spread within the colony, which is not obvious in the swamp, ”explains the ASBL...
