H5 avian influenza: contamination by the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus confirmed in a laying hen farm in Tongeren

An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been observed in a commercial laying hen farm in Tongeren (province of Limburg). In order to avoid any further spread of the virus, and in accordance with European and Belgian legislation, the poultry and birds still present are euthanized.

A protection zone of 3 km, as well as a surveillance zone of 10 km, are established around the outbreak. These areas are partly located in the province of Liège.

In these areas, strict biosecurity measures are imposed. Anyone detecting signs of disease in their poultry or birds should consult a veterinarian.

What can you do as a private holder?

Although this is no longer mandatory since May 14, we advise people who have poultry to protect their animals as much as possible. To do this, it suffices, as a preventive measure, to cover the chicken coop with nets to avoid any contact with wild birds . It is always obligatory to feed the animals indoors and to water them preferably in the shelter.

When breeders notice an increase in mortality, or any other symptoms related to the disease, they should contact their veterinarian immediately.

All the measures can be consulted on the FASFC website:
http://www.afsca.be/professionnels/productionanimale/santeanimale/grippeaviaire/mesures.asp

Help us protect our poultry! These measures should make it possible to prevent poultry from coming into contact with wild birds infected with the bird flu virus and likely to infect our animals.

In addition, we ask walkers to report dead wild birds via the freephone number 0800/99 777 .

Obligation of protection since October 5 for registered poultry farms.

The FASFC reminds all Belgian poultry farmers and private owners that the bird flu virus is circulating more and more among wild birds. The number of confirmed cases in wild birds has risen sharply in recent weeks. Therefore, the risk of contamination of poultry by avian influenza following contact with wild birds increases. The FASFC expects a strong avian flu season due to the situation of wild birds .

Agriculture Minister David Clarinval has therefore decided to reintroduce the obligation of protection (either by keeping the animals indoors or by placing them under nets) for all registered poultry farms - this is all commercial establishments, as well as amateur breeders registered in Sanitel [SUP]1[/SUP] . This measure came into force on Wednesday , October 5, 2022. Of course, any other holder who wishes, can protect his animals now.

What is the bird flu virus?

Avian Influenza (AI) or bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease to which all species of birds are likely susceptible. There is no scientific indication that this H5 virus is also dangerous for humans. The nature of the symptoms and the course of the disease depend on the pathogenicity of the virus strain, the affected animal, the environment and any other infections. Contamination can occur through direct contact with sick animals or through exposure to contaminated material, such as droppings or dirty crates. Indirect contamination is also possible through the air, but over relatively short distances.

The FASFC and animal health

While the FASFC is known for its checks across the entire food chain, the Agency is also responsible for preventing and combating regulated animal diseases. With regard to avian influenza, the Agency is working in close collaboration with the regional authorities.

The FASFC has launched an awareness campaign explaining the disease in more detail and how to apply the measures correctly, you will find more information via this website .

Avian flu: Afsca euthanizes all birds on a commercial farm

By Belga
Published on 26/12/2022 at 18:36

An outbreak of highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza has been detected on a commercial farm in Houthulst, West Flanders. "In order to prevent any spread of the virus", the poultry and birds still present have been euthanized, the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Afsca) said on Monday in a press release.

A three kilometer protection zone, as well as a ten kilometer surveillance zone, have been established around the outbreak, with “strict biosecurity measures”. "Anyone noticing symptoms among their poultry and birds should consult a veterinarian," adds Afsca.

The avian influenza virus has been circulating widely among wild birds since September, which leads to a high risk of contamination of farmed birds through contact with their wild cousins. “More than 20 infections have been identified among commercial and private holders in the past four months. In addition, dozens of infected wild birds have been discovered throughout the country, ”recalls Afsca.

The federal agency recommends that private owners protect their poultry as much as possible, for example with nets to avoid contact with wild birds. It is always mandatory to feed your animals indoors.

Avian influenza is a highly contagious viral disease to which all species of birds are likely susceptible. However, there is no scientific indication concerning the dangerousness of the H5 virus in humans, concludes Afsca.

Avian flu: more than 500,000 poultry had to be slaughtered in 2022 in Belgium

In 2022, more than 500,000 poultry had to be slaughtered in Belgium because of avian flu, Federal Agriculture Minister David Clarinval said on Wednesday in the House Health Committee.

Belgium
Posted on 2023-01-18 at 4:17 p.m.

"In Europe, the number of outbreaks in poultry farms during the 2021-2022 season is almost double that of the 2020-2021 season. We are seeing the same trend in Belgium. Despite a strengthening of biosecurity rules, unfortunately we see that the disease is no longer seasonal, but is becoming endemic,” said the minister, in response to questions from MPs Leen Dierick (CD&V) Karin Jiroflée (Vooruit) and Frieda Gijbels (N-VA).

"Preventing a zoonosis is impossible, the goal is to minimize its impact as much as possible. The bird flu circulating now is caused by highly pathogenic strains. Different compensations are provided for these types of diseases," he said. -he adds.

"On average, compensation from the health fund, managed by the FPS public health, is between 200,000 and 300,000 euros per professional poultry farm. Losses and compensation for professionals linked to the period of inactivity following the crawl space and to the restocking period are the responsibility of the Regions", added David Clarinval. "On the other hand, the Afsca covers the operational costs for surveillance and sanitation measures including euthanasia, destruction of animals, contaminated products and materials and cleaning and disinfection procedures. Last year, the amount mobilized was approximately 3.9 million euros."

In addition, a new Risk Assessment Group - veterinary - emerging zoonoses (RAG-V-EZ) has officially been created. This group of animal health experts has the task of dealing with emerging zoonoses that can be considered "important" for Belgium.

Press release (19/01/2023)

No less than 29 outbreaks of avian flu have affected our poultry farmers: the Minister of Agriculture and the FASFC note a sad record in 2022

In 2022, the avian flu virus has generated a year of intense work for the FASFC, the poultry farming sector and the other players concerned. No less than 29 outbreaks have been identified and confirmed in poultry and captive birds. A sad record, to be sure, but more limited than in the other Member States. And everything suggests that the virus will not disappear quickly in 2023.

More specifically, 18 outbreaks were identified in commercial poultry farms, 1 outbreak in an animal park and 10 among amateur breeders. Some 220 infected wild birds (area jurisdiction) were also found across the country throughout the year. Wild ducks, geese and gulls were particularly affected, and nearly 40 infected raptors were also found. New foci continue to be discovered in 2023.

In 2022, this resulted in nearly 4 million euros in operating costs for the FASFC and nearly 3.9 million euros in compensation from the Health Fund for the fight against animal diseases. This solidarity fund is based on the principle of co-financing by all producers and players in the poultry sector. This solidarity makes it possible to compensate poultry farmers affected by outbreaks of contagious poultry diseases such as avian influenza and Newcastle disease.

Avian influenza (AI), or bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease to which probably all species of birds are susceptible. So far, there is no scientific indication that this H5 virus is also dangerous for humans.

More bird flu infections across Europe

The increase in the number of infections is observed almost everywhere in Europe and proportionally even more often in countries other than Belgium. The culprit is the highly pathogenic H5 virus which has been circulating intensely in wild birds for 3 years. Due to its aggressive nature, it causes serious illnesses in many species of birds. Therefore, not only migratory water birds are affected, but also other bird species that still winter in Europe. Thus, this virus which formerly appeared seasonally during the migration of birds, now circulates all year round. Consequently, the risk of infection in poultry also increases and new infections are discovered throughout the year.

It is important to note that almost all epidemics are "primary infections". This means that these are infections directly linked to wild birds and not to the circulation of the virus between poultry farms. This is important, because it means that the measures imposed by the FASFC and the preventive and biosecurity measures applied by the poultry sector effectively contribute to preventing infections and the spread of avian influenza.

Prevention plays a crucial role

H5 viruses are not expected to disappear any time soon. It is therefore important that everyone takes (preventive) measures to protect our poultry as much as possible.Commercial poultry farms have long been subject to strict biosecurity measures and, since October 05, 2022, an obligation to stay indoors .

Biosecurity is a priority for the FASFC and must be further improved in the future. Therefore, the FASFC is working with partners on an IT tool to carry out audits and thus improve biosecurity. This is already the case in the pig sector.

When an outbreak is identified, the FASFC always establishes areas where additional measures apply. Current zones and measures can be viewed here .

Protection measures in Belgium

Currently, every professional keeper in Belgium is obliged to feed the animals indoors or protected under nets . In this way, infected wild birds are less attracted to the enclosure. The FASFC strongly advises all private owners of hens and birds to install a net on the course as a preventive measure, all year round . Finally, breeders should contact their veterinarian immediately if they notice increased mortality in their animals or any other symptoms of disease.

Walkers who notice a dead wild bird are invited to report it via the free number 0800/99 777 .

The three golden rules of.

What is the bird flu virus?

Avian influenza (AI), or bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease to which virtually all species of birds are susceptible. There is no scientific indication that this H5 virus is also dangerous for humans. The nature of the symptoms and the course of the disease depend on the pathogenicity of the viral strain, the affected animal, the environment and possible other infections. Infection can occur through direct contact with sick animals or through exposure to infected materials, such as manure or dirty crates. Indirect contamination by air is also possible, but over relatively short distances.

L'

While the FASFC is known for its checks along the food chain, the agency is also responsible for the prevention and control of regulated animal diseases. With regard to avian influenza, the Agency is working in close collaboration with the regional authorities.

"The situation is alarming. In Europe, the number of outbreaks in poultry farms during the 2021-2022 season is almost double that of the 2020-2021 season. We see the same trend in Belgium. Despite a strengthening of biosecurity rules, unfortunately we see that the disease is no longer seasonal, but is becoming endemic. In terms of possible response, Belgium supports the development of a vaccine option at European level, for which research is ongoing. Belgium will strive to place this theme as one of the central subjects of the Belgian Presidency of the Council in 2024. However, this vaccine will only be effective in addition to current control measures. I therefore invite all actors to strictly respect the preventive measures,-David Clarinval

Belgium: an outbreak of avian flu detected near the French border

By Sudouest.fr with AFP
Published on 01/12/2023 at 6:19 p.m.

The last infection in a poultry farm in Belgium dates back to last February

An outbreak of avian flu has been detected on a farm in the north-west of Belgium, near the border with France, Belgian authorities announced on Friday as the virus is currently circulating in Europe. This outbreak was detected on a farm in Diksmuide, West Flanders. “In order to avoid any further spread of the virus, and in accordance with European and Belgian legislation, the poultry still present are euthanized,” said the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (Afsca) in a press release.

H5 avian flu: Avian flu observed again in our country - Infection with the highly pathogenic variant confirmed on a farm in Diksmuide

An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian flu was observed on a farm in Diksmuide (province of West Flanders). In order to avoid any further spread of the virus, and in accordance with European and Belgian legislation, the poultry still present are euthanized. A 3 km protection zone, as well as a 10 km surveillance zone, are established around the outbreak.

In these areas, strict biosecurity measures are imposed. Within the 10 km zone, all poultry keepers (including individuals and amateur breeders) have an obligation to protect their animals. In the 3 km zone, this obligation applies to both birds and poultry. Anyone detecting signs of illness among their poultry or birds should consult a veterinarian.

All measures can be consulted on the AFSCA website: https://www.favv-afsca.be/professionnels/productionanimale/santeanimale/grippeaviaire/mesures.asp

Belgium and avian flu

Although no infected wild birds have been found in our country in the last two months and the last infection in a poultry farm was in February this year, this finding is not surprising. Developments in recent weeks in neighboring countries, where again relatively few infected wild birds have been found but where several outbreaks have recently been identified in poultry farms, show that the virus is still circulating in the north-west of Europe.

The confirmation of the highly pathogenic nature of this outbreak of avian flu by Sciensano (national reference laboratory) also means that Belgium loses its status as a free country at international level.

What can you do as a poultry and bird keeper?
Although it is no longer mandatory, we advise people who have poultry and/or birds to protect their animals as much as possible. To do this, simply cover the henhouse with nets as a preventative measure to avoid any contact with wild birds.

It is always obligatory to feed animals indoors and water them preferably under cover.

When breeders notice an increase in mortality, or any other disease-related symptoms, they should contact their veterinarian immediately.

Have you found a sick or dead bird? Let us know !
If you find a dead or sick bird on a walk or in your neighborhood, do not touch it and report it via our free number 0800/99 777 . The animal will be taken care of and examined.

What is the bird flu virus?
Avian Influenza (AI) or bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease to which all bird species are likely susceptible. There is no scientific indication that this H5 virus is also dangerous for humans. The nature of the symptoms and the course of the disease depend on the pathogenic nature of the viral strain, the affected animal, the environment and other possible infections. Contamination can occur through direct contact with sick animals or through exposure to contaminated materials, such as droppings or dirty crates. Indirect contamination is also possible through the air, but over relatively short distances.

The FASFC and animal health
While the FASFC is known for its controls across the entire food chain, the Agency is also responsible for preventing and combating regulated animal diseases. Regarding avian flu, the Agency works in close collaboration with regional authorities and Sciensano.

The FASFC has launched an awareness campaign explaining in more detail the disease and how to apply the measures correctly, you will find more information via this website .

PARIS, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Belgium has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, on a poultry farm in the northwestern part of the country, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Monday.

The outbreak, which would be the first this season, was detected in Diksmuide, not far from France. It killed 95 birds and led to the slaughter of the rest of the flock of 20,100 poultry, the Paris-based body said, quoting information from Belgian authorities.
