The healthcare system in Belarus is being propped up by volunteers and crowdfunding campaigns as the country grapples with a coronavirus pandemic its president has been hesitant to admit exists.

Belarus has attracted international headlines for its delayed response, continuing to host Europe’s only active football league, as the president, Alexander Lukashenko, dismissed the pandemic as a “psychosis”.

Sick officer: another case of COVID-19 in the army
Another case of coronavirus infection was recorded in the Armed Forces of Belarus: an officer of a military unit fell ill in the Grodno region

Last week, the defense department informed about the first sick COVID-19 in the army: the virus was detected in a soldier from the 72nd integrated training center in Pecs. Later, two more infections were recorded - at conscripts in Bobruisk.

A coronavirus test at an officer from a military unit in Slonim gave a positive result. He was hospitalized in one of the hospitals of Grodno.

Currently, doctors assess his condition as satisfactory - he does not need ventilation support.

The servicemen who were in contact with the sick were resettled at the training ground, where the necessary conditions were created for isolation in the event of a worsening epidemiological situation.

As of Monday, April 20, the number of deaths in Belarus with diagnosed coronavirus reached 51 people. The total number of cases is 6,264.
