I will be attending this conference coordinated by Safeamerica: Facing the Threat of a Pandemic Influenza- an executive summit for Philadelpia Area Business and Civic Leaders on Nov 14.

The UN, CDC, US Homeland Security, Booz Allen HamiltonCo., Campbell Soup, Motorola, Walmart, National PTA, NBC Universal, and more to present. Mr. Nabarro is not expected to present.

The conference is actually in Camden, NJ and is being sponsored by the Campbell Soup Co. plus others.

The conference is actually in Camden, NJ and is being sponsored by the Campbell Soup Co. plus others.

That's interesting. Campbell soup has been on sale every week in my area for the last 6 months. 50 cents a can for tomato and chicken noodle soup. (That's more than 1/2 off.)
Their other soups are on sale also, but at higher prices. And the stores have skids of these soups on display. I think Campbell's is trying to get more soup into peoples homes over the last 6 months.
It seems some of the large grocery chains in my area have a larger than normal inventory like never before. And I see very large stacks of laundry soap, bleach, hamburger helper, rice-a-roni, paper products and breakfast cereals.
Walmart does not seem to have any extra in-store inventory.

One of the panel discussions will be on "Protecting the Supply Chain."

It remains to be seen where the focus will be. This conference has been opened to non-profits at a much-reduced rate. Different sectors of the business world have been at this for some time; some non-profits started "like yesterday." Many have not started.

Walmart is to interested in the 1/2 of 1% savings.

Walmart does not seem to have any extra in-store inventory.

(added) My question is how do they intend to allocate food resources, both during a pandemic and when the pandemic has started abroad and folks are doing last minute prepping (from empty store shelves). For last minute prepping, I would suggest...

Food companies offer pre-boxed preparedness kits, say one box (apple box size) to hold enough for 4 people for 2 weeks. People could purchase in multiples appropriate to their situation. The boxes could have different menus. If they were marketed for "any disaster - hurricane, lost job, earthquake, major bills, pandemic, etc." it would make it a non-threatening choice for consumers. They could have budget, moderate, or gourmet versions - with matching prices.

Thank you ColorMyQuilt - It will be very important to see what case fatality rate the presenters are assuming in their planning. I was at BF a conference last weekend in Seattle that was co-sponsored by the CDC; they stated they were basing their intervention plans based on a 2% CFR.

I asked their epidemiologist how a CFR closer to 60+% would affect their intervention plans. He said, "It will pretty much nullify most everything." (Quote close-quote.)

I would assume there is some kind of plan for 60+% CFR. I don't expect it will be palatable, but there must be an unannounced plan. It might be to use the military to stop major mobility and let each region deal with their own problems.

Perhaps the question might be: what would they suggest the public do to prepare for a 60+% CFR?
