VANCOUVER -- For the second time in a week, health officials in British Columbia had no new deaths related to COVID-19 to report on Tuesday.

The province has credited the widespread vaccination of vulnerable seniors living in care homes for the declining number of deaths in recent weeks ? although they have also pointed out that the vaccine does not guarantee against outbreaks in those settings.

"We are all excited to get our COVID-19 vaccine, as not only do they provide protection, but also bring hope and renewal for all of us," provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a joint written statement.

"The vaccines are protecting more and more seniors and Elders. They are also helping break the chains of transmission in our communities where we continue to see outbreaks and spread. This is critical to our pandemic response."

Meanwhile, B.C. is still seeing a slow uptick in COVID-19 infections. Officials announced 556 new cases on Tuesday, pushing the province's seven-day average to 544 per day ? the highest it's been since Jan. 13.

British Columbia has now recorded a total of 88,929 infections and 1,407 related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Cases involving variants of concern are also quickly increasing in number. Henry and Dix announced another 116 confirmed variant cases Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 996, 130 of which remain active.

The B.1.1.7 variant associated with the U.K. accounts for the vast majority of variant cases, at 921. The province has also confirmed 41 cases of the B.1.351 variant discovered in South Africa and 34 cases of the P.1 variant first identified in Brazil...

Notable spike in people 19 to 39 years of age, provincial health officer says

B.C.'s COVID-19 caseload continues to spike, as health officials announced 800 new cases of COVID-19 and five more deaths on Thursday.

It's the highest single-day total for cases so far this year ? B.C. hasn't seen numbers above 800 since Dec. 2. The rolling seven-day average of new cases is now up 25 per cent over the last eight days.

There are currently 5,856 active cases of coronavirus in the province, the highest total since Jan. 8.

The news comes just hours after provincial officials loosened restrictions for visitors to long-term care homes and made temporary allowances for indoor religious services.

"While this is encouraging news, in parallel we have also seen a notable spike in the number of new cases, especially amongst those 19 to 39 years of age. This tells us some people are taking on more risk for themselves and their loved ones than what is safe right now," Henry and Dix said in the written statement.

"We remind everyone that although some outside activities are allowed, we must keep going with our protective layers."...

The province recorded 2,518 new cases of COVID-19 over the last three days, including a record high 936 on Saturday. Six more people have died.

VANCOUVER -- British Columbia has identified another 840 cases of COVID-19, pushing the province's active caseload past 7,000 for the first time since early January.

The latest infections also brought B.C.'s rolling weekly average to 826 per day, the highest it's been so far in the pandemic.

In a joint written statement, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix cautioned the province is seeing "the start of exponential growth" in COVID-19 cases.

"We are asking people for your help - particularly over the next three weeks - to push our curve back down again. This means staying small, staying outside and staying with our same group of close contacts," they said.

The alarming surge in infections also prompted officials to impose a slew of new restrictions on Monday, including a ban on indoor dining at restaurants that will remain in place until April 19.

B.C. has now recorded a total of 99,035 cases of COVID-19 and 1,455 related deaths. Henry and Dix did not have any new fatalities to report on Tuesday.

But the number of coronavirus patients in hospital has increased to 312, the highest it's been since Jan. 26, with 78 people in intensive care.

Health officials also announced another 320 confirmed COVID-19 cases involving variants of concern, bringing the provincial total to 2,553. Of those, 313 cases remain active.

The faster-spreading B.1.1.7 variant associated with the U.K. accounts for the vast majority of cases, at 2,134. Henry has recently pointed to emerging evidence that B.1.1.7 is also more likely to cause serious illness in all age groups...

B.C. sets back-to-back records for cases of COVID-19, with 1,018 on Friday and 1,072 on Saturday
Saturday's update includes no data on deaths or variants of concern, limited information on hospitalization

B.C. health officials have announced 2,090 new cases of COVID-19 in the last two days, but have provided no information about deaths, variants of concern or the number of active cases.

In a written statement on Saturday, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix only provided data on the number of patients in critical care ? 90 ? but not the overall number of people in hospital with the disease.

The only explanation provided for the missing numbers was a note that "some data are not available over the long weekend."

The update is the first from the province since Thursday. The number of new cases in both of the last two days have broken previous records for one-day totals with 1,018 on Friday and 1,072 on Saturday...

The team added seven players to league's COVID protocol list on Saturday, bringing the total number of players to 14. Sources told ESPN that two coaches were added to the list, brining the total number of coaches in protocol to three.

Seven players and a coach were already on the list, prompting the NHL to postponed Canucks games until April 8, with the practice facility opening no sooner than April 6.

According to sources, the Canucks' recent additions to the protocol list could keep them out of action even longer. The Vancouver region has recently become a hotspot for the P.1 Brazilian variant of the virus.

The latest numbers mean the province has identified an average of 960 cases per day over the last week, setting a new record. B.C.'s rolling weekly average has doubled since March 2 amid growing concerns about the spread of more transmissible variants of concern.

Monday's update was delivered in the form of a written statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix, who urged the public to follow their guidelines and protect each other to the best of their abilities...

More young people landing in ICU with COVID-19, B.C. health officials say, as 1,068 new cases confirmed
328 people are now in hospital, including 96 who are in intensive care
Bethany Lindsay ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 06, 2021 2:25 PM PT | Last Updated: 3 minutes ago

Another 1,068 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in B.C. and three more people have died of the disease, health officials announced Tuesday, as they warned that younger patients are now landing in intensive care.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the number of patients in hospital with the novel coronavirus has risen to 328, including 96 who are in critical care. Of those in hospital, 63 have confirmed infections with faster-spreading variants of concern, Henry said.

The province has confirmed another 207 cases of these variants of concern, all but one of which are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. To date, the province has seen 3,766 cases of these variants, including 266 cases that are still active.

Henry said much of the growing transmission that B.C. has seen in recent weeks can be linked to younger patients, who are increasingly ending up in intensive care. Often, that might mean younger people living in shared housing at a ski hill, working in restaurants or retail, and then gathering socially, passing the virus from one setting to the next.

"Unnecessary travel and social gatherings are fuelling the fire for the variants of concern," Henry said...

B.C. has recorded 1,293 new COVID-19 cases, breaking a previously held single-day record.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry also announced on Thursday that the province will no longer be sequencing all positive COVID-19 cases to determine whether they are variants of concern, and instead will be assuming that all positive cases are a highly infectious variant.

Henry said existing health measures remain the same regardless of what strain someone is infected with ? but emphasized the need for everyone in B.C. to follow current restrictions on gatherings.

"It is not OK to have friends and family over right now. It is not OK to go on a weekend getaway. That is not essential ? nor is your ski trip just because you have a pass. It is not OK to have a wedding, a birthday. All of these need to be postponed for now," she said.

When three or more employees at a workplace test positive for COVID-19, it will be closed down for 10 days.
