About 19 people in the Bay of Plenty have are confirmed to have H1N1 (Swine Flu), according to Bay of Plenty District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Neil De Wet.
"The rates of influenza in the community has increased, but not as high as it was last year," says Neil.
Of the 19 diagnosed with H1N1, about 11 were hospitalised. A proportion are also children, but health officials were unsure of the exact numbers.
Neil says hand hygiene is one of the best ways to fight the spread of H1N1, which will be the most common strand of influenza this winter.
He urges those who suspect they have influenza or H1N1 to contact their local GP or phone the health line on 0800 611 116.
"At this time of the year the emergency departments are very busy so it's important for people do see their GPs unless it's an emergency, or severe symptoms."
