Bats are the main transmitters of the virus family 'Paramyxoviridae' that causes measles, mumps, pneumonia, influenza and encephalitis in humans, Carr?'s disease in dogs and plague in small ruminants .

In an international study conducted in collaboration with researchers from the IRD and published in the journal Nature communications', identified more than 60 new species of these infectious agents that affect all animals, including humans. So, thanks to global sampling, research has shown that these viruses come from bats.

Virologists animals gathered about 10,000 samples, of which about 90 species of bats from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe. Through blood and organs, they observed a high genetic diversity of paramyxovirus in these small mammals, suggesting that these infectious agents had time to evolve largely in bats throughout history.

It is, for example, Hendra and Nipah virus, two newly emerging pathogens that caused fatal encephalitis epidemics in Asia and Australia. Currently there have been no human cases in other parts of the world.

However, the researchers identified in the bodies of African bats. In Gabon and Ghana, where he conducted the study, the two infectious agents are strongly present, so it is feared a possible emergency in the continent.
