HARRISBURG - The state's banking secretary on Wednesday urged Pennsylvania financial institutions to establish plans that would keep them open for business in the event of a flu pandemic.

"While there is currently no threat in Pennsylvania, we are obligated to plan for a pandemic so that we can systematically provide Pennsylvanians with essential financial services in a time of crisis," Secretary of Banking Bill Schenck said.

In particular, banks need to look at how their business would be affected if a large number of workers called out sick, Schenck said.

The state Banking Department also is extending its pandemic preparedness advisory to mortgage companies and check cashers.

Federal regulators have issued similar advisories to national banks and credit unions, Schenck said.
