Outbreak of cattle disease

OUTBREAK of cattle disease at different places in Lalmonirhat has gripped the farmers with concern.
Sources in the district livestock department said about 600 cattle have been attacked with mouth foot disease
across the district during the current year. Of them, 82 died so far.
Most of the cattle and goats have been attacked with diseases at Aditmari upazila.
But the unofficial figure of the number of cattle attacked with mouth foot disease and death is stated to be much higher.
Fazlu, a peasant of village Bhadai under Aditmari upazila, said his four cows died of moth foot disease on Friday and Saturday. The cattle disease is locally called ?khura rog.?
Abdul Ghani of village Bosuntari under the same upazila lost his one cow valued at Tk 15,000 last week.
Farmers are worried over the outbreak of khura rog as death of cattle and their treatment deal a severe blow to their economic condition.
Many of the marginal peasants become financially crippled following the death of cattle. They can ill afford \ to buy cattle after the death of the existing ones.
Nearly 850 goats have also been attacked with PPR disease at different upazilas in Lalmonirhat.
When contacted, Aditmari upazila livestock officer M Rashid said mouth foot disease breaks out regularly after the winter season. Most of the people prefer to consult quacks and kabiraj for the treatment of their diseased cattle and goats. As a result, a good number of them die due to wrong treatment by quacks, he added.
