DHAKA, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- With 32 new cases detected in the last 24 hours, total 479 people have been confirmed to be infected by anthrax until Thursday.

Bangladesh's Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) under the country's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on its website released the latest figure Thursday.

According to IEDCR, 8 districts out of 64 districts in the country have been found anthrax infected cases since the disease first broke out in Sirajganj district, 134 km northwest of capital Dhaka on Aug. 18.

DHAKA -- The number of human anthrax cases in Bangladesh rose to 495 as 16 more patients with the infection of the disease were detected in the past three days, official data showed Monday.

The latest figures, released by Bangladesh's Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) on its website on Monday, showed the number of anthrax patients rose from 479 on Thursday to 495 on Sunday.

DHAKA — More than 500 people have been infected by anthrax as a major outbreak of the disease spreads through Bangladesh's dairy belt, a health official said Tuesday.

Ten districts have confirmed outbreaks of anthrax in humans and cattle, with the total number of people infected rising to 508 across the country, health ministry director Mahmudur Rahman told AFP.

No humans have died because the cases of human infection consist of cutaneous, or skin, anthrax -- which causes wound-like lesions but is not fatal if treated properly.

"Thirteen new cases of human anthrax have been reported in the last 24 hours. This indicates that the rate of new infections is slowing down," Rahman said.

"The vaccination programme for cattle is having an impact," he said, adding that outbreaks appeared to be localised.

Last week, the health ministry said that 66 people became infected in one day.

Anthrax does not spread directly from one infected human or animal to another, but is spread through spores. Humans can contract anthrax from handling diseased animals or eating infected meat.

Bangladesh's current outbreak has spread through the dairy farming districts because of diseased cows being slaughtered and then sold on, officials said.

Fresh cases reported


As many as 18 fresh cases of anthrax infection have been detected at Gilabari village of Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat district yesterday.

With this, the district has so far witnessed 94 anthrax-infected people, confirmed the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).

A total of 60 patients of the district have been cured and the rest are being treated in upazila health complex and in their houses, said a source from Lalmonirhat sadar health complex.

According to IEDCR, a total of 520 people contracted anthrax between August 18 and September 16 this year. More than half the patients have been cured so far.

Meanwhile, 30 more people are feared to have infected with anthrax at Kamalnagar upazila in Lakshmipur district on Friday and Saturday. Based on the symptoms, the acting district civil surgeon has started administering medicine.

This is the second time in the country that humans are infected with anthrax although the disease is not new to cattle. IEDCR records show that the first human infection occurred in the country in August last year. A total of 35 people in Sathia and Pabna contracted the disease at that time.

IEDCR virologist ASM Alamgir said, "The lifestyle of people may be the reason behind the anthrax outbreak. People in our country slaughter sick cattle and eat the meat to save money of recover losses. Poverty and lack of awareness is responsible for this and the poor are the usual sufferers."

He said those who are farming on a limited scale often do not bother going to the local livestock office to vaccinate their cattle although it is very cheap. These farmers rather feed the cattle with steroid to make them flabby, which weakens their immune system and make the cattle vulnerable to anthrax.

Anthrax continues to spread unabated afflicting more people in new areas. Since the first case of this communicable disease was reported in Sirajganj district forty days ago, the number of people so far fallen sick with anthrax have crossed 600. The disease has till now spread to twelve out of country's sixty four districts. Alone in Pabna district, ten new cases of anthrax were reported in a single day on September 22. The report was officially confirmed.

As anthrax infection spreads at a faster pace, panic grips public mind. The result is disastrous for the country's livestock resources, particularly cows, bulls and goats...

Anthrax 'red alert? lifted

The government has lifted 'red alert' which was earlier put on in the wake of nationwide anthrax disease outbreak.

The Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas addressing the reporters after a meeting with the leaders of the Leather Trade Association (LTA) at secretariat yesterday.

Referring to the recent report of the Ministry of Health the Minister said that no anthrax-infected cows were not found in last 11 days and no human being was infected in last four days...

Bangladesh lifts anthrax red-alert

DHAKA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Emboldened by the halt in anthrax cases among humans, the Bangladeshi government on Thursday lifted the red-alert but instructed the officials concerned to remain on high alert.

The Bangladeshi government on Sept. 5 this year announced red- alert across the country following the spread of cutaneous human anthrax to different districts.

Bangladesh's Fisheries and Livestock Minister Md Abdul Latif Biswas told reporters at a press briefing Thursday, "The government has withdrawn the red-alert but asked the officials concerned to remain on high alert."

He further said, "We've decided to lift red-alert as there is no information of fresh outbreak of the disease in the last few weeks."
