I'm bettin if any pigs are around birds falling out the sky, a few will get sick. That is the only report of pigs I have seen. China will report on anything dying, as long as it is is not in their own country.

China doesn't have boots on the ground in Bangaldesh.

We know birds are dying in Bdesh..crows, pigeons, or whatever. We also know that pigs are succeptable to bf. There are countless reports on bf in other countries,reported by china. If the pig report is false, then all here can take my apology. Havent seen it reported again anywhere else and bet I have been lookin.. Bdesh is not puttin out too many reports
So on the subject of pigs.. just when was the last actual report of any having bf published? Half of these countries at least, have piggeries in them,yet no reports of them of them bein infected.Now we have one possibly and it's a translation screwup? Or there are no eyewitnesses from the reporting country? The story says as reported by the Bdesh livestock officials.. Maybe the chinese reporter just threw them in there for good measure?

Pigs, cats in Indonesia infected with H5N1
Oct 10, 2006 (CIDRAP News) – Pigs and stray cats have been found infected with the H5N1 avian influenza virus in Indonesia, adding to the few previous reports of such cases, according to news services.

A study from Udayana University found that two pigs on the island of Bali were infected with the H5N1 virus in July, senior agriculture minister Musni Suatmodjo told Reuters yesterday. According to news reports, veterinary faculty from the university discovered the infected pigs in Bali's south-central Gianyar and Tabanan regencies.

News reports didn't say if the pigs were sick or died.

There are no REPORTS of pigs dying from H5N1 in Bangladesh. Chinese papers would get info from wire reports (or WHO, FAO, MOFL), and none of the above are reporting pig deaths.

H5N1 translates to "birds and beasts" which is commonly found in translations (no google required).

The china veterinary network...at www.cadc.gov.cn carries the same story that mentions pigs. That is an official govt organization...not a newspaper. I would venture to say that they do not report stories that are not CHECKED.. ..course I could be wrong. Since when have the WHO, FAO, MOFL givin any timely, truthful reports? Maybe the CDC will tell us? Dont expect any verified reports on human infections in India or Bangladesh either...at least not for a few months. When I find another story on pig infections or human cases they will be reported. Maybe they will post a retraction of this pig story..that would really set things straight.

It doesn't matter how many times H5N1 is translated into "birds and beast" or "birds and pigs". It is a translation issue and has nohing to do with H5N1 in swine in Bangladesh.

Does it quote Bangladesh as saying pigs are dying or birds are dying on poultry farms?

I think are better understanding of news flow would avoid these issues in the future, In many cases, local news sources rely upon wire service reports as sources. Sometimes they just use a translated version. Other times they compile multiple wire service reports into one local report. The local services do not do independent investigations to add new information to the wire story. A larger wire service like Xinhua will make a phone call or e-mail to add detail. These Xinhua stories are widely distributed (like Reuters, AP, AFP, etc), so a local paper will use that story, which was posted on this thread earlier.

H5N1 translates into "birds and beasts" in Chinese. I don't know if H5 is birds and N1 is beasts or that just the symbol used, but none of the original English language reports mention pigs, nor do the MOFL, WHO, or OIE reports describing the outbreaks, which are the origin of the wire service reports in general.

In this particular instance, the story developed as follows. After the initial news story used to start this thread, I went to the MOFL site to compare the latest updates to the last update I had captured in the spring, which should a significant jump in the intervening months (the reports show numer of farms culled, location, and total birds culled). Daily checks showed a significant jump (there is no archive with each report, so real time capture is required). WHO issued a situation update on the outbreak that began Nov 29, but didn't have a final serotype. I did a commentary citing the WHO update and the number of dead birds to conclude the serotype would be H5N1. ARGUS then used the Recombinomics commentary to issue an alert, which was then carried in the US government AIDD. Recombinomics then issued updates each time the MOFL report changed. These reports appear at various websites including Newsnow, where the stories usually go to #1. The commentaries have links to the origin sources (MOFL, WHO, OIE), which then get confirmed and out comes the wire service report.

In this instance, none of the above say anything about H5N1 in anything other than poultry (no Google required).

12/12/08 ARGUS--International media report that a new outbreak of avian influenza (AI) or ?bird flu? was confirmed at a poultry farm in Rangpur district on 2 December. Local farmers reported cases of unusual poultry mortality to the district veterinary officer on 28 November. The Bangladesh Ministry of Fish and Livestock has issued a December 27 report detailing another culling in Kurigram of 297 birds. This outbreak follows the outbreak at Balatari village last week (see updated map) and raises concerns of unreported outbreaks in adjacent areas, since Kurigram is small and shares borders with Cooch Bahar, Assam, and Meghalaya.

Assam has reported additional outbreaks in western areas, but there have been no reports near the Bangladesh border. Cooch Bahar and Meghalaya have issued alerts, but have not reported any outbreaks

Moreover, Bangladesh also reported an outbreak last week in Gailbandhi and West Bengal also confirmed H5N1 in the English Bazar block of Malda. However, there were also excessive poultry deaths in the adjacent blocks of Ratua I, Gajole, Manikchak, and Kaliachak II, although media reports indicate these dead birds were not tested.

H5N1 is likely to spread as birds migrate south and the temperature drops. Testing in India has been minimal, and low sensitivity tests are being used fro surveillance, while samples fro dead or dying poultry are not collected. All initial positives in Assam were from tissue samples and not from the low sensitivity serum tests.

Failures to control current outbreaks will lead to further H5N1 spread.
