First 3 cases of coronavirus reported in Bangladesh

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has said three Bangladeshis have tested positive for coronavirus in the country.

IEDCR Director Meerjady Sabrina Flora made the disclosure during a press briefing on Sunday.

She said of them, two recently returned from Italy.

The affected people are aged between 20 and 35.

The IEDCR director said one person was already affected among the two who came back from Italy. Both of them had come from different cities in Italy.

Both of them are from separate families. After they went back to their homes, they called our hotlines to get tested. Later, they tested positive.

“After that, we started testing people who came into contact with the two returnees and that is how we found the third affected coronavirus patient. Three others who were in their contact are in quarantine at the moment,” Meerjady said...

Bangladesh on Tuesday extended a nationwide shutdown until April 11 to stem the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the shutdown, announced on March 26 and due to end on April 4, was being extended for five more days, the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency reported.

The shutdown, which the government continues to refer to as a “general holiday”, will officially end on Friday, April 9, but the next two days are the regular weekend.

The decision came as two more COVID-19 cases took Bangladesh’s tally to 51 on Tuesday. The country of around 165 million people has so far reported five deaths due to the coronavirus...

But the densely populated country lags far behind most other countries in testing for COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus.

The total known number of the infected in Bangladesh is 56, among whom six have died, according to data from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research or IEDCR until Thursday.

The tally of infections has also soared to 70 after nine more people tested positive in the last 24 hours, according to data released by the health directorate on Saturday.

This is the biggest jump in positive tests over a 24-hour period since Bangladesh announced its first cases on Mar 8.

Four others have returned home after recovery, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 30.

The authorities collected 553 samples from across the country in the last 24 hours and tested 434, Abul Kalam Azad, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, said in an online briefing.

One of the two patients who died in the last 24 hours was immediately diagnosed with the infection while the other was diagnosed earlier, said Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research.

One of them was from Dhaka and the other was from outside. One of the dead was aged 90 while the other was 68. Both of them belonged to the vulnerable group and were already suffering from different conditions.
