Editor-in-Chief & President
DHAKA, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Bird flu has spread to another district in northwestern Bangladesh, forcing health and veterinary workers to cull some 6,000 chickens and destroy over 2,500 eggs, officials said on Saturday.

Bird flu was first detected near the capital in March and has since spread mostly to northern districts. There have been no cases of human infection.

The latest case was reported in a village in Pabna district, 160 km (100 miles) from the capital, Dhaka, a senior official of the fisheries and livestock ministry said. Including Pabna, 20 of Bangladesh's 64 districts have been affected by the virus, which has forced authorities to kill 256,000 chickens and destroy nearly three million eggs since its outbreak. About 4 million Bangladeshis are directly or indirectly associated with poultry farming. (Reporting by Ruma Paul; Editing by Michael Winfrey)

5,600 chickens culled in Pabna after detection of avian flu

Pabna, Correspondent

Some 5,600 chickens were culled and 2,600 eggs were destroyed by health and veterinary workers at a poultry farm at village Dolon in Chatmohor Upazila of Pabna yesterday after detection of avian influenza.

The poultry birds of Jewel Rana Poultry Farm were culled after the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute at Savar detected avian influenza in the sample sent from the farm.

In the morning, 2,900 large size chickens and 2,700 small size chickens were culled in presence of the district livestock and local police officials. Besides, 2,650 eggs were destroyed at that time. These were later burnt and buried.

District Livestock Officer Dr Abdul Hye told The New Nation that they are monitoring the situation and the poultry firm's owners have been asked to remain cautious about the influenza.

Bird flu was first detected at Savar, near the capital Dhaka in March and has since spread mostly to northern districts. However, there have been no cases of human infection.

Apart from Pabna, 19 of the country's 64 districts have been affected by the virus, which has forced authorities to cull 2,56,000 chickens and destroy nearly 30 lakh eggs since its outbreak.

About 40 lakh people are directly or indirectly associated with poultry farming in the country.
