Bird flu detected in Dinajpur

Bird flu (Avian Influenza) has been detected at a village in Chirirbandar upazila in Dinajpur, according to district livestock department officials.

They said two fowls in Shatnala village were infected with unidentified disease days back.

These were sent to Joypurhat Livestock Research and Testing Institute where, during test, they were found infected with bird flu, the officials said.

When contacted, Chirirbandar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mominur Rahman said livestock department officials told him that bird flu was detected in two fowls in Shatnala village. Effective steps have been taken to check spread of the disease, he added.

3000 domestic fowls culled in Dinajpur

About 3,000 domestic fowls were culled and buried from all of the 257 households of four villages under Satnala union of Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur in the early hours of Thursday.

This is the first incidence of massive bird flu disease among the poultry birds of local species in the area.

In the first week of June, some 40 chickens died of an unknown disease in Dighipara, Chandapara, Nalipara and Khubupara villages of Satnala union, locals said.

Samples of the dead chicken were sent to Chirirbandar Livestock Office that sent the samples to Joypurhat Livestock Research Institute and Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute at Savar in Dhaka for testing and the reports identified the disease as bird flu (B1H5), district livestock officials said.

As the reports reached Dinajpur on Wednesday evening, a team led by Chirirbandar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Mominul Islam along with three magistrates, officers and employees of district and upazila livestock offices, police and BDR went to the affected village the same night.

They started killing and burying the domestic chickens, ducks and pigeons at 12:30pm and it continued till Thursday morning.

The upazila administration told the poultry farmers that they would be compensated while the local union parishad arranged announcement through loudspeakers to make people aware of bird flu disease.

District administrative officials said the situation is under control and as a precautionary measure poultry farmers in those villages have been instructed not to rear chicken, duck and pigeon for the next three months.

5,000 poultry birds culled in Rangpur

About 5,000 poultry birds were culled in seven villages of Rajendrapur and Uttom unions in Rangpur Sadar upazila yesterday.

A nine-member team led by magistrate Israil Hossain culled the poultry birds following detection of bird flue (avian influenza) at the villages by the Livestock Department.

Earlier, a meeting of the Bird Flue Protection Committee was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) on Sunday. The meeting decided to cull all the poultry birds immediately.

On contact, Additional District Livestock Officer Azharul Islam said the department detected existence of avian virus (bird flue virus) in dead bodies of chicken belonging to Sufia Bewa of Uttom union and Ekramul Hossain of Rajendrapur union. He said, 'We sent the dead bodies to Gaibandha laboratory first and then to Dhaka. After examination, the experts confirmed existence of bird flu virus.'

Rangpur DC Khandker Atiar Rahman said the poultry birds owners would be compensated in due course. He said, 'We are monitoring all poultry farms in the district. The poultry farm owners are asked to take all precautionary measures.'
