Nine children reportedly died of viral fever and 26 others fell ill in hilly Tripurapara of Situakunda in Chittagong in the last four days till Wednesday, reports UNB.

Four of them died on Wednesday in their respective houses, said Sitakunda Upazila Health Officer SM Nurul Karim Rashed.

Staff Correspondent, Chittagong: Nine children have died of fever at the remote hilly area of the district' Sitakunda upazila.

The children aged of four to nine of Tripura tribe of Sonaichhari union died since Saturday to Wednesday.

After visiting the area today, Civil Surgeon Azizur Rahman Siddique told media that the children first caught fever having rash on their bodies. They later, died after suffering from cough and breathing problem."

Six more children have been newly affected by an unknown disease, which has so far claimed lives of nine children in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong.

The children, all aged between four and eight, are now receiving treatment at Bangladesh institute of Tropical and Infectious Disease (BITID) in Fouzderhat...

Meanwhile, a medical team from Dhaka went to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) and BITID where a total of 52 children are being treated.

Civil Surgeon of the district Azizur Rahman Siddique came up with the disclosure at a press conference at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at noon. ?The physicians of the special team said the disease is not contagious. There?s no reason to be panicked,? he said. The physicians think the children fell sick due to long-time malnutrition, the Civil Surgeon said adding that the main reason behind the mysterious disease can be known after analysing the blood samples.

Meanwhile, six more children were admitted to the CMCH on Thursday as they were affected by the disease, said Health Officer Dr SM Nurul Karim Rashed.

More children fall sick; people's poor living conditions come to fore

Seven more children became sick yesterday in Sitakunda's Tripura Para where nine others died this week showing similar symptoms.

Body formed to debunk Ctg ?mysterious? disease


A three-member committee has been formed to confirm what caused the outbreak of a mysterious disease that has taken the lives of nine children in Sitakunda upazila.


Civil Surgeon of the district Azizur Rahman Siddique said the three-member probe body, headed by Mirsarai Upazila Helath Officer Dr MD Abdul Malek, has been constituted to look into the matter, reports UNB.


The committee has been asked to submit its report within 72 hours, he said.

Dead Sitakunda kids were suffering from measles: DGHS

Nine children, who died, showing similar symptoms, in Sitakunda of Chittagong recently, were suffering from measles, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The assertion came today after a medical team from Dhaka collected blood and serum samples from the affected children, and conducted laboratory tests.

?The disease spread out through measles virus. But it won?t further spread,? Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), told The Daily Star following the tests.

Last reported, at least 87 children were also suffering from the same disease in remote hilly village Tripura Para area.
