Bangladesh: Measles outbreak intensifies in Cox's Bazar

May 12, 2026

Faced with an alarming resurgence of measles cases in Bangladesh, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has stepped up its operations in the Cox's Bazar district. Our teams are working in Rohingya refugee camps and with local communities to treat patients, especially children, and try to contain the spread of the virus.

An alarming increase in measles cases in refugee camps

Since January 2026, the number of measles cases has risen sharply throughout Bangladesh , affecting almost all 64 districts. Cox's Bazar , home to more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in the world's largest refugee camp , is now one of the areas most at risk. Extreme overcrowding and dilapidated infrastructure there facilitate the rapid spread of the disease.

According to health coordination organizations in the camp, the toll is already heavy:

More than 330 suspected cases and 40 confirmed cases in the camps (including 3 deaths).
Nearly 160 suspected cases reported in surrounding host communities.

“We observed a sharp increase starting in March, which accelerated further in April ,” explains Mieke Steenssens, MSF medical coordinator in Bangladesh.
