Dengue turns alarming in Dhaka
148 hospitalised since May, survey finds high presence of Aedes

Dengue has taken a turn for the worse in Dhaka since May 1 as a survey has found high presence of the vector of the disease, Aedes mosquito, in the capital.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services, 258 people were hospitalised with dengue in Dhaka this year and two of them died but 148 of them were hospitalised in 33 days since May 1.

Its director for communicable diseases Sanya Tahmina said that the situation was ?alarming?.

?The situation has not improved compared with the past year,? she said.

The number of dengue cases was the highest since 2000 in 2018 as at least 26 people died of dengue and 10,148 others were hospitalised with dengue in Dhaka, according to the health directorate...

The number of dengue patients has been increasing in various hospitals both in the capital and neighbouring districts at the onset of monsoon. According to data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room, at least 462 dengue patients were admitted to various hospitals in the city from January 1 to June 14. Of them, 223 patients were admitted only between June1 and June 14. Among them, two patients died.

?The rise in the number of patients is due to the pre-monsoon rain. The number of patients has increased this year compared to last year,? Dr. Ayesha Akhter, in-charge of disease control room at the directorate of health, told The Independent. ?We have received reports that the number of dengue patients in different hospitals of the country has gone up compared to last year. There are some new hospitals which also received dengue-affected patients,? she said...

586 infected in country in May-June; two die so far

The dengue situation in the country is getting worse this year as the number of infected people has more than doubled since last month, compared with the same period last year.

According to a report of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 155 people were infected with dengue last month and 586 more till the 23rd of this month. However, the number of infected people was 52 in May and 295 in June last year.

Experts said climate change effects, intermittent rain, pattern of weather and lack of cleanliness were the main reasons for this increasing number of dengue cases.

A total of 10,148 people were infected with dengue last year and 26 of them died. It was a record for the number of dengue cases in a year. The previous highest was 6,232 in 2002.

Every hour, on average two patients affected by dengue have been admitted to various hospitals both in the capital and neighbouring districts, raising the number of dengue patients to 1,699 last month. According to data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room, in May at least 193 dengue patients were admitted to various hospitals in the city. The number increased to 1,699 in June. Three of them died.

From January 1 to June 30, at least 2,277 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals, of them 2,015 were released after receiving treatment. Currently, 262 are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the city, the data said. In June 2018, in all 295 patients were admitted, while in June this year the number increased to 1,699. ?The rise in the number is due to the pre-monsoon rain,? Dr Ayesha Akhter, in-charge of the disease control room at the Directorate of Health, told The Independent.

?We have received reports that the number of dengue patients in different hospitals has gone up compared to last year. There are some new hospitals which also received dengue-affected patients,? she said...

Cases of the mosquito-borne fever five times that of last year

The number of recorded dengue fever cases in May and June was more than five times than that of the corresponding months of last year and things are getting even worse.

Only 347 people were infected in the two months of last year but this year 1,864 got infected in May and June, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

What?s more alarming is that in the entire month of July 2018 at least 946 people were infected but only nine days into the month this year, 1,182 people have already been diagnosed with dengue.

Three people have died of dengue so far this year.

However, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon yesterday played it down.

The situation ?is under control?, he said, adding that there was no reason for panic.

Admitting that infection rate was higher this year, Khokon, citing the Health Department, said about 2,100 patients came from outside Dhaka to get treatment for dengue in the last few months and over 1,800 of them were cured.

?The medicines we are using to kill the mosquitos are slightly less effective than promised ... overall, the outbreak is relatively higher,? he told reporters after attending a workshop at the Sonargaon Hotel.

?Such stats prove that dengue has not become an epidemic. We would have informed the people otherwise,? he said, adding that mobile medical teams would be active in city wards from July 15 to treat patients for free...

In the nine days since July 1, 154 dengue patients, on average, have been admitted to Dhaka hospitals and this indicates how grave the situation has become in recent weeks. A total of 1,384 dengue patients have been admitted to various city hospitals between July 1?9, recording an average admission of 154 patients per day with regard to a dengue outbreak.

Experts say the disease has assumed serious proportions. More people could be affected if preventive measures are not taken immediately. That the situation has been worsening was evident from the fact that 172 people were hospitalised with dengue in Dhaka in the past 24 hours, ending yesterday noon.

Sounding a note of alarm, experts have urged the authorities to take prompt action to destroy the larvae of Aedes mosquitos, the carrier of the virus. According to data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room, least 1,750 dengue patients were admitted to various hospitals in the city in June while the number stood at 1,384 only in the first nine days of this month.

From January 1 to July 9, at least 3,458 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals. Among them, 2,766 were released after receiving treatment. Currently, 689 patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the city. Three of them died, including a doctor, according to the data.

In July 2018, altogether 946 patients had been admitted to hospitals, while 1,384 patients have had to be hospitalised in just nine days of this month. Health minister Zahid Maleque recently admitted an increase in the number of patients. ?Dengue infestation is much higher this year. DHAKA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Over 2,000 fresh cases of dengue fever were reported in Bangladesh so far this month, bringing the total number of confirmed cases this year to 4,247 in the South Asian country.

Ayesha Akhter, assistant director at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health, told Xinhua on Monday that "152 fresh cases of dengue were reported in the 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time Monday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases till July 15 this month in the country to 2,164."

She said the number was 946 in July last year.

According to the official, three people died in Bangladesh due to dengue fever since January. "While one death was reported this month, there were two deaths in April," said the official.

An official of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) under the Health Ministry said on condition of anonymity that both the number of patients and the death toll could be much higher.

He said all the hospitals and clinics in the country are not properly providing information about their dengue patients to the relevant government departments.

The official said some 10,148 people were infected with dengue fever last year and "26 of them died."

The June-September monsoon period is the season of dengue fever in Bangladesh which is considered a high-risk nation for mosquito-borne diseases.

The south Asian country with a population of about 160 million is especially vulnerable to virus because of insufficient biosecurity and deficient disease surveillance...

Dengue reaches alarming proportions in Dhaka

The dengue epidemic in the capital has assumed alarming proportions with the number of patients and the death toll climbing steadily. The situation is worsening in Dhaka with over 200 dengue patients being admitted to various city hospitals a day. There is not a single hospital in the capital without dengue patients. In just 24 hours of time, ending yesterday noon, 233 people were hospitalised in the capital.

World Health Organisation (WHO) delegates yesterday terming the situation as alarming but said it was still under control. The WHO delegation assured the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to work in preventing diseases like dengue and chikungunya in the capital.

The city authorities have taken several initiatives to combat the mosquito menace but there has been no significant outcome yet.

According to data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) control room, a total 233 patients affected by dengue was admitted to different government and private hospitals yesterday, while the number of patients were 211 on July 19 and 201 on July 18.

As of now, the number of deaths caused by dengue stood at five and at least 6,045 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals in the capital till July 20.

The number of dengue patients has more than doubled in just 20 days this month compared to last month...

The health department has recorded more than 5,500 dengue cases in July, the highest number for a month in the history of this mosquito-borne viral disease in Bangladesh.

This year it took an appalling turn with the change of signs and symptoms of the inflicted person. Doctors suggest not to neglect fever even after the recovery.

As on Monday, the Directorate General of Health Services has recorded 5, 637 cases in July only. Before this, the highest number in a month was last year in September - 3,087.

Prof Mahmudur Rahman, former director of the government?s disease monitoring arm IEDCR, and now an adviser to the ICDDR,B, said this year due to the change of dengue pattern, the hospitalisation rate is huge.

?That may be the reason we see the rise in numbers in government record."...

The number of people admitted to hospitals with dengue infection this year is well on its way to surpass the highest annual tally of dengue cases in the last two decades, official data indicates.

This year, a total of 9,657 dengue patients were reported to have been hospitalized until Friday since January 1, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With hospitals overflowing with patients and the rising number, dengue is all set to break the previous record ? which was 10,148 in 2018 ? by today or tomorrow.

Despite that, the Dhaka city authorities corporations as well as top government officials continue to say that the situation is ?under control,? whereas medical officials fear that this year's outbreak might become the worst since the first outbreak in 2000...

Dengue spreads in 61 districts

Almost every part of Bangladesh has now been affected by the deadly mosquito-borne disease, dengue, with cases reported from 61 districts until Tuesday, reports news agency UNB.

More people are being diagnosed with dengue every day. In 24 hours (until 8:00am), over 1,300 new dengue cases were reported from across the country, according to official figures.

The number of new patients was 1,096 on Monday.

Blood samples are being taken for test. Photo: UNBSince January, the government said 15,369 dengue patients were hospitalised. Of them, 10,953 were cured and 4,408 others are still undergoing treatment.

The government claims that only eight people have died of dengue this year but unofficial accounts say the number is higher.

Meanwhile, five people died of dengue in Dhaka and Barishal on Monday and Tuesday.

Their deaths were reported by the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.

Most of the dengue cases have been reported from Dhaka. The WHO on 20 July said the dengue situation is alarming in Bangladesh but it was not out of control.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said 973 people were infected by dengue in Dhaka in the last 24 hours.

Apart from those in the capital, 104 others were diagnosed with dengue in Dhaka division, 55 in Chattogram, 56 in Khulna, 20 in Rangpur, 56 in Rajshahi, six in Barishal, 55 in Sylhet and nine in Mymensingh division...

The health directorate has updated its tally of dengue fever-related deaths so far this year to 14 from eight even though media reports put the fatality count at more than 50 deaths.

Director General for health services Abul Kalam Azad told bdnews24.com they have a dengue death review committee and so far they have reviewed 20 deaths. ?Of them 14 (death) has been confirmed to have been caused by dengue?

Dengue fever that has taken a heavy toll on public health this year in Dhaka has spread almost all over Bangladesh with a record number of infections.

Panicky people are being seen queuing up in the diagnostic laboratories as this year dengue appears with atypical symptoms requiring blood testing at the beginning of the fever...

At least three people including a pregnant woman died of dengue as the tally of patients suffering from the mosquito-borne virus kept spiraling with 1,687 new cases across the country on Friday. Shockingly, two of the victims died in Dhaka.

The deceased are Md Raiyan Sarkar, Mosharraf Hossain and Maliha Mahfuz Onnya.

Raiyan, a 6th grader of Government Mohammadpur Model School and College, died while undergoing treatment at Square Hospitals in Dhaka while Mosharraf, 30, at a Noakhali hospital.

The expectant mother, Maliha Mahfuz Onnya, died at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), a private news channel reported, without disclosing her identity.

She had been suffering from dengue fever for the last ten days.

With the latest deaths, the number of people who died of the mosquito-borne virus jumped to at least 47, according to the unofficial tally.

Interestingly, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) claimed that no deaths took place due to dengue in a 24-hour span until last afternoon...

Dengue outbreak: 1,649 hospitalised in 24 hours

Dengue cases are still surging across the country as 1,649 more new people were hospitalised with the mosquito-borne deadly virus in 24 hours till 8:00 am on Saturday.

DHAKA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Dengue cases in Bangladesh has surged to around 25,000 nationwide with 18 deaths so far this year, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said on Sunday.

On Aug. 1-4, according to the figure reported by the DGHS under the Ministry of Health, 6,967 more dengue cases were recorded after more than 15,359 people were infected with the mosquito-borne disease in the last month, which were more than the total number of patients in any past year.

According to the DGHS, the number of patients was 10,148 in the last year including 946 cases in July 2018 and 26 of them died.

At least 75 people reportedly died of dengue this year till Sunday in the country. But the DGHS puts the figure at 18.

"As of Aug. 4, 2019, a total of 24,804 cases of Dengue virus disease, including 18 deaths, have been reported in the country since Jan. 1," Ayesha Akhter, assistant director at the DGHS, told Xinhua.

Meanwhile, she said a total of 1,870 fresh dengue cases were reported in the 24 hours till 8:00 a.m. local time Sunday, the highest number in a single day...

Unofficial tally is over 60


Five more people have died of dengue in Rangpur, Dinajpur, and Dhaka, raising the unofficial tally to 60.

In Dinajpur, a man named Rabiul Islam died at the M Abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital at around 5am on Tuesday, the hospital?s Director Dr Khairul Kabir told Dhaka Tribune.

There are around 47 dengue patients admitted in the hospital as of now.

In Rangpur, a three-year-old girl named Rianna died of the fever at the Rangpur Medical College Hospital early Tuesday.

Hospital spokesperson and Associate Professor of the Medicine department DrAsaduzzaman also confirmed that around 61 dengue patients have been admitted so far.

In Dhaka, a woman named Hafsa Begum Lipi died while undergoing treatment at Anwer Khan Modern Hospital on Monday night.

According to the latest data provided by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 2,065 patients have been admitted to different hospitals countrywide due to dengue fever between Sunday and Monday.

Furthermore, the number of admitted patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals combined is 7,658.

According to DGHS, a total 18 dengue patients have died across Bangladesh till date.

Since January 1 till August 5, a total of 27,437 people have been affected by dengue.

Most of the people who died of dengue this year suffered shock syndrome and were second-time infected, said the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).

Meanwhile, three more people died of dengue yesterday, taking the unofficial death toll to 60, and a record 2,096 dengue patients got admitted to hospitals across the country in 24 hours since 8:00am Sunday.

IEDCR Director Prof Meerjady Sabrina Flora said they believe that of the 18 deaths due to dengue they confirmed, 70 percent were second time dengue patients.

Flora, who heads the death review committee of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said most of the deaths were due to shock syndrome, a dangerous complication from dengue often caused by a secondary infection with a different virus serotype...

The dengue outbreak is continuing to spread despite various efforts and warnings by the government, city corporations, and some in the private sector, to bring down the proliferation.

Between January 1 and Thursday, the number of dengue patients mounted to 34,666, as another 2,326 people were hospitalized across the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Latest data shows people affected by the dengue virus numbered another 16,205 between August 1 and August 8 alone, whereas the figure was 16,253 for all of July...

More dengue patients hospitalised outside Dhaka amid Eid exodus

As many as 2,176 dengue patients were hospitalised across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Saturday morning, with more than half outside Dhaka as millions of Eid-ul-Azha holidaymakers are leaving the capital for their home districts.

The hospitals outside Dhaka admitted 1,111 dengue patients in this period while those in the capital 1,065, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

The rate rose from 2,002 of the previous 24 hours.

The new cases have taken the number of total dengue patients hospitalised so far this year near 39,000, including over 20,000 in the first nine days of August.

Many of the patients were leaving hospitals after brief stay following doctors? advice, according to Borhan Uddin, an official at the Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room.

?It is a matter of hope that the number of released patients is rising,? he said...

Another 2,334 new cases in the last 24 hours till Sunday afternoon

The government has said a total of 40 people have died due to dengue fever across the country from January 1 till Sunday. However, the unofficial death toll is around 80.

Thirty-nine of the deaths were recorded at hospitals in Dhaka city. Another one was reported from Dhaka division (outside the capital), the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
