Dhaka, July 26 (bdnews24.com) ? Dwellers in Dhaka city are feeling the bite of Aedes mosquitoes, which carry dengue virus, with the number of patients afflicted with the viral fever beginning to swell.

Director general for health services Prof Khondaker Mohammed Shefyetullah said at least 216 people have been afflicted with the disease since January this year, with no death record.

He, however, urged the people 'not to be panicked, rather be aware of it...'

Dengue catches DCC napping
Strikes early this year; number of infection shows sharp rise as anti-mosquito drive hardly carried out; DCC complains of poor logistics

The dreaded dengue fever is back. The number of dengue-affected people in the capital took a sharp rise with 82 new cases reported from July 23 to 28.

According to the control room of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 188 people contracted dengue fever in the capital this month, whereas the number was just 35 in July last year.

The statistics however, only gives a partial picture of the spread of this communicable disease. The figures of the affected are collected from only 25 private hospitals and clinics out of 592 private and 10 public hospitals in the capital. This leaves one to expect a much graver situation in the city as a whole.

Meanwhile, according to Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) a total of 202 people were infected with dengue fever in June and July this year while the DGHS puts the number at 249.

?Last year, there were no filed cases of dengue fever in June but 61 cases had been reported in June this year,? said Prof Mahmudur Rahman, director of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR)...

473 dengue cases detected in Dhaka
Dengue, an infectious tropical viral fever, is increasing alarmingly in Dhaka city with the highest number of 473 cases reported till August 11 this year, according to an expert.
The government authorities have, however, emphasised on creating mass awareness about the dengue fever and motivating the city dwellers to take part in the drive to eliminate the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquito around their homes.
?The information of dengue cases received from the control room of the office of the director general (DG) indicates that the present trend is going up,? Prof Mahmudur Rahman, director, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) told newsmen yesterday.

Containing dengue fever

The number of dengue patients in Dhaka city during the first eight months of the current calendar year has surpassed the recorded average annual cases of dengue in the past five years. Official statistics put the number of dengue-afflicted patients at 1005 until the last week of the last month. Five of them died. In fact the number of victims of this vector-borne disease would be far more than what the official statistics say for many patients do not visit hospitals and prefer to go to private medical practitioners for treatment.

The first outbreak of dengue fever was documented in Bangladesh in 1964, followed by a few scattered cases in 1977-78...
