The thieves intimidated people on board the vehicle and stole a number of items, including cash and the box containing the blood samples.

From the above, it would seem that the blood samples weren't specifically targeted but a disturbing report nonetheless.

Interesting, Pathfinder. I missed that when it was posted here.

They both referenced Kankan, but the AP report I posted says it took place on Wednesday (the 19th). The article you posted has a date of the 17th (Monday). i wonder if this has happened more than once in that area of Guinea.

Bandits run with a sample suspected Ebola: "The risk is there," warned the head of the anti-Ebola fight

The authorities in charge of anti-Ebola fight hope the arrest of a group of highway robbers who seized a cooler containing samples from a suspected Ebola death. The bandits took the cooler during an attack against a public transportation vehicle. The police and the gendarmerie have been put on their trail.

Pending the conclusion of the tracking, the national coordinator of the fight against Ebola admitted on Saturday that there is a risk that the bandits or others be contaminated if the sample contains viruses. "To say that their act is risk free would be a lie," said Dr Sakoba Keita, during the weekly press conference on the Ebola outbreak. "It is a biological product considered hazardous by us all. To take it in these circumstances, there are risks, "said Keita. Before you ask: "Where did they put it? Have they thrown it in the bush? Have they hidden it? "

The highway robbers who thought maybe to steal gold or diamond will certainly open the cooler. And they will be disappointed. Dr Sakoba wants the bandits to leave their "loot" expose in the sun. Which easily kill the virus, if there is in the sample. He adds, even if they hid it somewhere, viruses could die, at the latest, after a week. "The real risk is that other people touch the cooler, and that they are infected with this liquid" worries Dr. Sakoba Keita. The Mr. anti-Ebola in Guinea fears that the suspect sample opens another chain of contamination.

According to Dr Sakoba, it took the arrival of Ebola for some district hospitals to be equipped with special vehicles for the transport of samples. The hospital of Kankan would have received the vehicle after the attack by highway robbers.
