Two organ recipients died from a rare form of encephalitis after receiving organs from a man who died at University Medical Center, federal and local health officials confirmed Thursday.
The deaths mark the second-ever confirmed cluster of transplant-transmitted Balamuthia granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, which is caused by a microscopic parasite. The first occurred in Mississippi in 2009, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released Thursday.
The 27-year-old organ donor was thought to have died of a stroke on July 21. The donor was a landscaper who had a large skin lesion on his back for about six months that he had attributed to an insect bite, the CDC says. A Balamuthia infection may manifest as a skin lesion or rash...
