Darrel L. Hildebrand (1953 - 2009)
Darrel L. Hildebrand 1953 - 2009 Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, November 14th, at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Park, 2739 Panama Lane, for Darrel LeRoy Hildebrand (56). Darrel served as Assistant Director - Kern Council of Governments, and died November 5, 2009, in Mercy Southwest Hospital of complications arising from the H1N1 (swine flu) virus. Darrel was born October 7, 1953, in Taft, CA, to Willis and Jean Hildebrand and was the younger of two sons. He moved to Bakersfield in 1965, where he lived the rest of his life, graduating from South High School in 1971 and California State College Bakersfield in 1975 with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. He later returned to Cal State and earned his Master's degree in Business Administration. Darrel was the proud son of a "Greatest Generation" sailor and maintained a great pride in, and admiration for, our Nation's veterans and service members. He was a devoted father, brother and friend whose fierce loyalty never wavered. Darrel was widely respected in the local community, Kern County and California for his integrity and work ethic. He was an unabashed, self-described "public policy wonk", the result of a voracious love of reading that began early in his life. His proudest professional moments came as he worked with his devoted staff members to create and publicize the Kern Regional Blueprint Program in the latter part of his nearly 25 years at Kern COG. Darrel enjoyed sports and the great outdoors. A proud family man, his vacations were often planned around camping/fishing trips. He was known to say, "I won't vacation anywhere that won't accept our dog." ("Pete" was the family's beloved golden retriever.) Darrel also loved nothing better than a good debate; one never doubted where he stood. Darrel's legacy will live on through his children, his work on behalf of his community and in the scholarship established in his name. He wanted nothing more than to reflect proudly on the memory of his late father. Mission accomplished. Darrel was preceded in death by his father, Willis, in 1963. Survivors include: son, Darren and daughter Kelly; mother, Jean Cryts of Mohave Valley, AZ; brother, Lawrence of Phoenix, AZ; and nieces, Carly Hildebrand and Kristy Jeffery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the following: CSUB Foundation, Attention: Darrel Hildebrand Public, Policy Scholarship Fund, 19AW, 9001 Stockdale Highway, Bakersfield, CA 93311-1022.
