MANAMA: Bahrain yesterday reported its second swine flu death in three days, when a 24-year-old man became the first Bahraini to succumb to the H1N1 virus.
Mousa Jassim Al Taitoon, from Naim, died at the BDF Hospital at 3.10am yesterday, five days after being transferred from the American Mission Hospital.
Three Bahraini women, one aged 70, were said to be in critical condition with swine flu last night, two at Salmaniya Medical Complex and one at the BDF Hospital.
Health Ministry officials urged private hospitals to step up their vigilance, amid allegations that Mr Al Taitoon could have been diagnosed and treated earlier.
The BDF Hospital has filed a written complaint to authorities against the AMH, which denies mishandling the case.
Mr Al Taitoon was already in critical condition when he was transferred after being treated for pneumonia for two days at the AMH, said the BDF Hospital official.
"The patient was suffering from acute respiratory failure and we immediately suspected he was suffering from swine flu," said the official.
He said rigorous treatment, including anti-viral drugs, was started immediately, but Mr Al Taitoon failed to respond and eventually died.
Two Bahraini women were in critical condition at the SMC's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) yesterday, said a hospital official.
One, in her 30s, had just delivered a baby at a private hospital while the other, a 50-year-old, has been in the SMC for several days.
Another Bahraini woman, 70, was said to be in a "critical but stable" condition at the BDF Hospital.
Runaway Filipina housemaid Jane Tamad Diale, 30, became the first person in Bahrain to die from swine flu, on Sunday, four days after she was admitted to the SMC.
