B.C.'s H1N1 death toll now at 51

B.C. recorded two new H1N1 flu deaths over the past week and 23 more severe cases. Both victims died in the Vancouver Coastal region.

But an additional two deaths in the Interior health region that occurred in previous weeks have only now made it into the stats as a result of a reporting delay.

Swine flu has now killed 51 B.C. residents and put 1,032 in hospital.

The death toll so far is far fewer than the 400 to 800 who die each year from seasonal flu, but H1N1 has tended to attack much younger victims, rather than the frail elderly.

Most of those who have died have had underlying medical conditions making them more vulnerable and the median age of those hospitalized is 36.

Mass vaccination clinics across B.C. end Friday as the impact of the virus continues to wane.

Officials would like to see two-thirds of the province's population vaccinated to help ensure a third wave of H1N1 doesn't strike in the months ahead.

By the way, in this article the estimate of seasonal flu deaths is said to range from 400 to 800 per year. The midpoint - 600 - would yield a population based death rate of 0.0136%. As I have pointed out elsewhere, these flu viruses are incredibly consistent in terms of fatality. For every estimate of seasonal flu that I've seen, the death rates are between 0.011% and 0.014%.

Or could it be that everybody uses the same models? Hmmm?
