B.C. reports third death associated with Swine Flu

VANCOUVER ? British Columbia is reporting another death associated with the novel Swine Flu virus but says the case is not yet laboratory confirmed.

The ministry of health said two deaths are confirmed out of 536 cases reported in B.C. so far. 102 new laboratory confirmed cases of Swine Flu have occurred in the one-week period between July 20 and July 27.

?To date, two laboratory-confirmed H1N1 cases in B.C. are reported to have died. One patient was from Fraser Health (region) while the other was from Interior Health (region),? said a statement issued by the government.

?Another death in the province has been associated with H1N1 influenza but was not laboratory-confirmed,? said the statement which did not provide further details of where the death occurred or any other information about the victim.

The health ministry said 25 of those infected with Swine Flu have been admitted to hospital while 11 were so sick they had to be admitted to intensive care units.

Across Canada, three more deaths were reported between July 23 to July 28, taking the national total of fatalities to 58. During the weekly reporting period, one person died in Alberta, one in Quebec and one in Nova Scotia.

The federal health department said 20 people have died in Quebec so far with 18 dead in Ontario, seven in Manitoba, five in Alberta, four in Saskatchewan, two in B.C. and one each in Nunavut and Nova Scotia.

VANCOUVER ? A third person has died in B.C. from the H1N1 virus.

The person lived in the Lower Mainland where two of the three B.C.'s fatalities occurred.

To date, 634 individuals in British Columbia have tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus as of July 27 that has caused illness in the U.S., Mexico and dozens of other countries.

The death is believed to have occurred in the last week.

B.C. records 3rd swine flu death

Health-care officials have confirmed a 19-year-old man is the third person in B.C. to die from the swine flu.

According to information from the Public Health Agency of Canada, the death was reported in the last week.

Officials say the man was admitted to Abbotsford Regional Hospital on July 20, where he died nine days later.

Dr. Roland Guasparini, the chief medical health officer for Fraser Health, said the man had underlying medical conditions that predisposed him to serious illness associated with the H1N1 influenza virus.

Guasparini wouldn't say what the underlying medical condition was, but he said generally, it could be anything that compromises the heart or lungs.

This is the second swine flu-related in B.C.'s Fraser Valley. The other recorded death was in the Interior.

There are also 94 new cases of swine flu infection, bringing the total number of infected people in B.C. to 634.

Across Canada, 62 deaths have been attributed to the swine flu virus.
