B.C. records 8 more swine flu deaths

Eight more people have died in B.C. in the last seven days after getting the H1N1 flu, bringing the provincial death toll to 42 since April, according to the weekly update issued by provincial health officials on Tuesday.

Health officials say of those deaths, 37 patients had underlying medical conditions, four had no other health problems and one case is still under investigation.

Four of the deaths happened in the Fraser Health region while two occurred in the Interior Health region and two on Vancouver Island.

In addition to the latest deaths, another 93 people have been admitted to hospital with severe flu symptoms, raising the provincial total since April to 957 cases.

The health ministry says most lab-confirmed cases of H1N1 in British Columbia have been mild or moderate and the patients have either already recovered or are recovering.

Health officials have also said that the virus has peaked in B.C., and is on the decline.

(HUMAN SWINE FLU) UNDER SURVEILLANCE​

VICTORIA British Columbia continues to monitor and respond to the spread of the pandemic H1N1 flu
virus. Since Nov. 24, there have been 93 new severe cases of H1N1 identified in
B.C. nine in Fraser Health, 13 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 21 in Interior
Health, 45 on Vancouver Island and five in Northern Health with eight new
deaths, including two in Interior Health, four in Fraser Health and two on
Vancouver Island. The majority of lab-confirmed cases in B.C. have been mild or
moderate in severity, with the patients either having already recovered or
currently recovering.





While the Province continues to monitor all
laboratory-confirmed cases, the weekly report now includes only severe confirmed
H1N1 cases (hospitalizations and deaths). For more detailed surveillance data,

How many severe cases of the H1N1 flu
virus are there in B.C.?



Since Nov. 24, there have been 93 new severe
cases of H1N1 identified in B.C., with eight new deaths.



In total, BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC)
has confirmed 957 severe H1N1 cases in British Columbia since April 2009,
including:


o
346 in Fraser Health, including 17 deaths.


o
206 in Interior Health, including nine deaths.


o
43 in Northern Health, including one death.


o
243 in Vancouver Coastal Health, including seven
deaths.


o
119 on Vancouver Island, including eight deaths.



To date, 42 laboratory-confirmed H1N1 cases in
B.C. are reported to have died. Of those, 37 cases had underlying medical
conditions while four had no underlying conditions. One case is still under
investigation.
