Despite a B.C. researcher?s findings that shows a greater risk of catching H1N1 if immunized against regular flu, health officials are encouraging the public to be vaccinated against both this fall.
Vancouver Island Health Authority has ordered 218,000 doses of flu vaccine for distribution this fall that will contain antibodies to fight three strains of flu, including H1N1. Medical health officer Dr. Murray Fyfe set aside concerns that a regular flu vaccine could increase risk of H1N1 infection.
?I don?t think that mystery has been completely resolved,? he said about research led by by Dr. Danuta Skowronski of the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.
?(It was based on) Canadian data, but we?re not seeing (that trend) in other places in the world.?
He described the findings as a spurious correlation, perhaps a result of looking at unexpected data that didn?t make sense.
Fyfe still said it?s important for people, especially the elderly or those with health conditions, to be vaccinated against all types of flu.
