Health officials are warning there has been an outbreak of whooping cough in the Hope area of the Fraser Valley, east of Vancouver.

There were 15 cases reported in December and another five since August, according to a statement issued by the Fraser Health Authority on Wednesday morning.

Fraser Health issued a health alert to easter Fraser Valley residents this morning, warning of an outbreak of whooping cough.

The outbreak was first reported in Hope in early January. Now, cases are being seen in the Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs area. The warning is being issued in Agassiz, Harrison, Hope and Chilliwack...

But isolated cases in the region may be normal annual occurrences, not a spread of the outbreak

The isolated pocket of about 20 cases of whooping cough in Hope at the start of the year has travelled to nearby Chilliwack - and grown to more than 100 cases.

And there could well be significantly more cases that are going unidentified and unreported.

"The true number is probably about three times that," said Dr. Elizabeth Brodkin, medical health officer with the Fraser Health Authority...

Whooping cough spreads in Fraser Valley

Whooping cough continues to spread in the Fraser Valley, with at least 140 cases confirmed to date since the outbreak was first reported in December.

“Certainly we are seeing numbers this year we haven’t seen for five or six years now,” said Fraser Health spokesman Roy Thorpe-Dorward. “We know the real count is significantly higher because so many cases go unreported.”

The outbreak began in Hope last year and spread to Chilliwack and Agassiz early this year. There were 80 confirmed cases in Hope between August 2010 and Jan. 11.

Since then, other cases have been identified in Langley, Surrey and Maple Ridge and the Fraser Health Authority put out an advisory on Feb. 20 that “the pertussis outbreak … may be spreading more broadly.”

Since then, Thorpe-Dorward said, it has spread again to White Rock, Burnaby, Abbotsford and Coquitlam...

Fraser Health is organizing vaccinations to put the brakes on a whooping cough outbreak

There are just two confirmed cases in Langley and five in Surrey, with 150 confirmed or suspected cases around the region. However, there are likely many other cases that have not yet come to the attention of doctors...

A whooping cough outbreak in the Fraser Valley appears to be spreading into Metro Vancouver with 38 confirmed cases detected across the region in January, health officials say.

Vancouver Coastal Health that's more than three times the usual number of cases for this time period, and as a result it is now offering free vaccines to pregnant women, their partners and for anyone with children under 18 months...

Whooping cough outbreak in Fraser Valley continues to grow

METRO VANCOUVER - The Fraser Health Authority reports that the whooping cough outbreak in its region is continuing to grow, with more than 255 cases since early December, including 45 new cases since early March.

Fraser Health said in a news release issued today that the actual number of cases is likely much higher.

The authority is urging adults who are in regular contact with young children, including pregnant women and their partners, to get the free whooping cough vaccine...

Almost three hundred cases of whooping cough have been reported among Fraser Valley residents in the past nine months.

The recent outbreak ? part of the upward trend in pertussis infections in Canada and the U.S. in the past year ? is slowing now, but remains a concern for Fraser Health officials.

Of the 295 probable and reported cases, 247 were confirmed whooping cough in laboratory tests since the outbreak?s start in November 2011 to July 7, according to Fraser Health spokesman Roy Thorpe-Dorward...

Vancouver is in the midst of a whooping-cough outbreak. And according to Vancouver Coastal Health?s medical director of communicable-disease control, things could get worse before they get better.

?We are still getting new cases,? medical health officer R?ka Gustafson says in a phone interview. ?One reason we are being cautious is that it can take up to about three weeks from the time someone is exposed to pertussis [whooping cough] to get sick. School?s been back in for about a month. We?re monitoring carefully for any increase in cases with the school year back in session...?

Four confirmed cases of whooping cough on Gabriola Island has health officials urging parents to vaccinate their children.

Vancouver Island Health Authority is reporting an "unusual" number of whooping cough cases on Gabriola Island this week, with the third and fourth cases confirmed Thursday (two are children)...
