The FDA approved the drug 2 years ago and a company called Rare Disease Therapeutics sold the drug to a distributor for $3,500 per dose, many times higher than the $100 per dose charged by pharmacies in Mexico. (But I assume this company may have borne the costs of obtaining FDA approval.)
The distributor then charged hospitals about $3,780 per dose, which is a small mark-up.
A woman in Chandler was bitten in the abdomen by a scorpion and went for treatment since she was becoming seriously impaired. She was charged $39,652 per dose for 2 doses. (Plus the fees for hospital and medical services.)
Her insurance company paid $57,509 of the total bill and the woman was stung again for the balance.
