A Maricopa County infant died of whooping cough this month, the first such death since 2009, the county Department of Public Health said.

The baby was too young to be immunized and likely contracted the illness from an adult, health officials said...

A whooping cough outbreak has hit Arizona. Doctors say we haven't had an outbreak this bad in more than 50 years...

..."We are at 600 cases statewide. To give you some perspective last year for the entire year we had 860 cases..."

The number of confirmed cases of whooping cough in Maricopa County so far in 2012 is more than triple last year's tally for the same period...

...There were 282 confirmed cases of whooping cough as of Sept. 13, according to county public-health records. Of that number, about a third involved infants under 12 months old.

In comparison, there were 83 confirmed cases during that period in 2011, and 40 in 2010, according to county records...
