Ayurvedic relief for Chikungunya patients

By Sandun A. Jayasekera

Chikungunya, the widespread viral fever with a series of complications could be treated successfully by Ayurvedic therapy, a research scientist said yesterday.

?We have an indigenous formula to treat Chikungunya patients since 2004 and patients who were treated vouched that pains and symptoms disappeared after they took our medicine,? Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute Research Director Prof. S.P. Samarakoon told the Daily Mirror.

?The treatment is not a cure in the real sense.

The medicine, a mixture of several Ayurvedic drugs is given to lessen the pain and symptoms as Chikungunya is a viral fever. When taken continuously for a couple of days the pain and fever disappear,? he said.

The treatment varies according to the physical condition of the patient and treatment must be taken strictly under the supervision of an Ayurvedic doctor, he said.

The Ayurvedic therapy with drugs such as Sudharshana Choorna, Devadara Paha, Seetharama Vati and Murthujaya Vati has proved highly effective without any side effects, Prof. Samarakoon said.
