The SENASA (National Agricultural Health Service) has immediately implemented the following measures:
1. Official screening in the outbreak area and around it; as security measures, the active surveillance program will be extended to areas of greater population density (Ica, Lima, La Libertad, Arequipa and Tacna), industrial and backyard farms will be visited for clinical evaluation; serological samples and tracheal swabs will be collected in backyard farms and fighting bird flocks.
2. A teleconference has been held with all directorates of the SENASA at national level in order to train all staff on the control of the disease.
3. A national and international official communication has been conducted in conjunction with the Peruvian Poultry Association.
6. At the same time, according to the regulation of the poultry health system in Peru, poultry farmers are invited to strictly implement good practices on biosecurity, cleaning, disinfection, epizootic control and sanitation process in poultry farms and fighting bird and backyard flocks as well as good practices in handling trays for eggs transportation.
7. The use of a symptomatic treatment is being evaluated; vaccination against laryngotracheitis is not currently permitted.
8. The official action plan should be completed according to the results of the screening and to the technical bases for control and eradication.
9. Active and passive surveillance, training and communication at all levels will continue.
10. An international seminar on laryngotracheitis is planned on 15 September in Lima.
11. As part of the transparency of the Peruvian Veterinary Services, all trading partners were informed about this event.
