Could a seasonal flu shot help protect against bird flu? International study points to a surprising possibility
As potentially deadly avian influenza (H5N1) continues its global spread, moving from birds into mammals and in rare cases into humans, scientists are confronting a difficult reality. If a human pandemic emerges, vaccines designed specifically to protect people against H5N1 may not be ready in time.

New international research led by National Taiwan University, in collaboration with USF Health, suggests that part of the answer may already exist.

In a study published April 15 in Emerging Microbes & Infections, researchers found that seasonal influenza vaccines in routine global use may significantly reduce the risk of death from H5N1 infection. The results are based on a systematic review and analysis of ferret studies, widely considered the gold standard animal model for human influenza.

The findings highlight an important implication for pandemic preparedness, suggesting that readily available tools may offer protection while the world races to develop more targeted solutions.

The Taiwan-US research team analyzed nearly two decades of experimental data from 35 controlled studies involving almost 1,800 ferrets. Seasonal flu vaccines that included a specific component, neuraminidase N1, reduced H5N1-related mortality by approximately 73 percent in vaccinated animals compared with unvaccinated animals.

That level of protection was comparable to some H5N1-specific vaccines that failed to generate strong immune responses and was only modestly lower than those that did.

In contrast, seasonal vaccines lacking the N1 component showed little to no protective effect, underscoring how specific elements of existing vaccines may play an outsized role in defending against emerging threats.

“This work suggests that we may be underestimating the broader protective value of seasonal influenza vaccines,” said Chi-Tai Fang, MD, PhD, professor of infectious diseases epidemiology at National Taiwan University and National Taiwan University Hospital and senior author of the study. “While they are not designed to target H5N1, certain components appear to activate immune responses that can reduce the severity of infection. In a real-world setting, that kind of partial protection could translate into lives saved while more specific vaccines are being developed and distributed.”

For Sten Vermund, MD, PhD, dean of the USF Health College of Public Health, chief medical officer of the Global Virus Network and a co-author, the findings highlight an important opportunity for pandemic preparedness.

“In a pandemic scenario, timing is everything,” Dr. Vermund said. “We often face a critical gap between the emergence of a new virus and the availability of a targeted vaccine. Our findings suggest that seasonal flu vaccination, something already widely available, could help reduce severe outcomes during that window. That is a meaningful advantage when every week matters.”

The study also revealed something unexpected. The seasonal vaccines did not produce detectable antibodies against H5N1 using standard tests. Instead, the protection appears to come from more complex immune mechanisms likely involving cross-reactive cellular responses that are not captured by traditional measures of immunity, suggesting protection may exist even when it is not detectable through standard laboratory markers.

These findings arrive at a critical moment, as H5N1 continues to spread among mammals while limited amounts of vaccine are available globally. This leaves health systems vulnerable in the early stages of an outbreak. While not a substitute for targeted vaccines, extensive adoption of seasonal flu vaccines could buy time by reducing deaths, easing strain on health systems and slowing the impact of a rapidly spreading virus.

The researchers caution that the findings are based on animal models and must be validated in humans, but they also point to an important next step in understanding how existing immunity built through routine vaccination may shape responses to emerging infectious diseases.

The study also reflects USF Health’s role in advancing global infectious disease research and pandemic preparedness through international collaboration, including its partnership with the Global Virus Network, headquartered at USF Health.

Britain invests £25m to halt new pandemic risks in Southeast Asia

Britain is investing £25 million to boost pandemic preparedness and halt outbreaks in Southeast Asia, a known hotspot for dangerous new pathogens.

The initiative, which announced its first grants this week, includes projects to bolster disease surveillance in remote communities, train specialist laboratory scientists, and run simulation exercises to stress-test the region’s ability to tackle emerging threats.

In an exclusive interview the Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Seema Malhotra, told the Telegraph that the portfolio is an “example of how we are investing smartly” to keep UK nationals safe – within Southeast Asia and beyond.

“Look, we have British nationals across the region, it’s a really important space for our growth, our prosperity, our security,” Ms Malhotra said during a trip to Bangkok. “But we also see that when pandemics start, they can spread very quickly – unless you’ve built the capacity to detect early, to respond very quickly, and to contain those outbreaks.

Wisconsin egg production cut in half as farms struggle with avian flu, higher expenses

Egg production in Wisconsin is less than half of what it was a year ago, reflecting a major decline in the number of laying hens in the state.

That’s according to the latest data collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Wisconsin produced 91.7 million eggs in April, the latest month available. That’s down 57 percent from the same month in 2025.

The data shows there were 3.69 million laying hens in the state. It’s 56 percent lower than the previous April, when Wisconsin had 8.3 million birds.

The state’s total laying hens fell dramatically last September, after Daybreak Foods’ farm in Jefferson County was hit by avian influenza and culled more than 3 million birds.

Laying hen numbers started to rally in December into February. But numbers fell sharply again in March after three different locations — each with more than 1 million birds — were forced to cull their flocks due to avian flu, including the same farm in Jefferson County.

In March 1957, forest officials in Shimoga district, Karnataka noticed something wrong in the trees. Monkeys were dying — not one or two, but dozens, scattered through the Kyasanur forest. Then villagers who had gone in to cut wood or graze cattle started dying too, of a fever with no name. Locals called it “monkey disease.” A long-standing theory holds that forest clearing for new villages and grazing land pushed monkeys to spend more time on the forest floor, in the undergrowth, where infected ticks lived - though scientists still don't fully understand the disease's ecology, and gaps in that picture remain even today. What is clear is that Kyasanur Forest Disease emerged at exactly the point where human, animal and environmental life overlapped.

That is the pattern behind almost every zoonotic disease: not a single cause, but a shift in the relationship between people, animals and the land they share. It is happening again right now — the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Central Africa is only the latest reminder that outbreaks rarely emerge in isolation. Whether it is Ebola, COVID-19, Nipah, Avian Influenza, Rabies or Kyasanur Forest Disease itself, preventing the next public health emergency means paying close attention to the places where human, animal and environment collide.

Several viruses capable of infecting humans discovered every year, study reveals

​Experts say novel pathogens are unearthed all the time, and any one of them could trigger the next pandemic

Two to three new viruses capable of infecting humans have been discovered every year, a major new study from three universities has found.
The study, which analysed historical medical papers over the last 100 years, found that at least 239 species of human-infecting viruses have been found since the turn of the 20th century.

Mark Woolhouse, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh’s Usher Institute, said: “New human-infective viruses are being discovered all the time. Any one of them could be Disease X – the cause of the next pandemic.
“Our database will help researchers characterise the threat and prepare for it.”

JOURNALIST: If I can ask the experts as well, looking to the future of this, it sounds like it can’t be eradicated in wildlife. It might be able to be managed in poultry farming. Long term, is this something we live with? How long will that take? What is actually the future of this?

COOKSON: Certainly the experience that we have seen overseas is that this is a disease that they have been dealing with for a long period of time – in many cases since about 2022 when this strain started to spread more rapidly around the globe. What we can’t predict is exactly what it will look like within the Australian context. We do have unique fauna. We have got unique geography, and so whilst we can do the best that we can with learning from the overseas experience – and that’s exactly what we’ve done in terms of our preparedness – our focus will be on now monitoring where that spread is occurring and mitigating the impacts as best we can. The response that we are working to at the moment is looking to make sure that as far as possible we’re identifying those sites and populations where risks can be reduced. And we’ll continue to do that into the foreseeable future. We’re also very well engaged through our local jurisdictions, state and territory governments, who are engaging with local governments, they’re engaging with the local community to make sure that in those locations they’re well prepared to live with the bird flu and to adapt to this situation.

TONOPAH, AZ — Newly released government records are revealing what happened behind the scenes as crews killed millions of egg-laying hens during the 2025 bird-flu outbreak at Hickman’s Family Farms.

The documents detail a chicken-killing operation disrupted across two days, heat-related illnesses among workers, an employee’s fall from upper cages and a fight in an employee parking lot.

And, of course, no humans on the crews culling millions of chickens were diagnosed with H5N1. What are the chances? Not one human. Must be phenomenal ppe procedures...in the summer...in Arizona...ok.....
