According to the evidence of the avian influenza in dead wild birds at Lake Constance, a suspicion of domestic poultry has occurred in Vorarlberg. . The results of the samples are to be available on Friday, said Ulrich Herzog of the Ministry of Health on Thursday to the APA. Around Lake Constance Lake Constance is about a kilometer wide protection zone, in this area domestic poultry must be kept in the stable.

Confirmation of avian influenza (avian influenza subtype H5N8) in a domestic poultry farm

Vienna (OTS) - The Federal Ministry of Health and Women (BMGF) confirms the occurrence of highly pathogenic H5N8 virus in a free-range turkey farm on the Lake Constance in Vorarlberg. The company, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the location of the positive wild birds, was immediately blocked by the official veterinarian. The animals of the poultry stock are now protected against animal welfare, the animal carcasses harmlessly eliminated and the plant subsequently cleaned and disinfected. There is no danger for consumers as there is so far no evidence that the subtype H5N8 is dangerous for humans. ****

A protected zone (radius at least 3 km) and a monitoring zone (radius at least 10 km) are drawn around the affected operation. Within the protection zone, all poultry holdings are inspected by an official veterinarian.

Special measures within the protection zone:
• Biosafety must be observed in all poultry farms;
• The use of poultry is prohibited - the poultry must be kept in such a way that no contact with wild birds can take place;
• All suspect birds (fall of the laying, waste of feed, increased deaths) must be reported to the competent veterinary authority;
• Discarded waterfowl and birds of prey are to be reported to the competent official veterinarian.


The measures to be taken locally by the veterinary authorities on the ground have been coordinated with the authorities of the Lake Constance States and assisted by the necessary assistance.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Women still points out that the negligent dissemination of animal diseases constitutes a criminal offense to be prosecuted. Therefore, the entry of locked and suspicious establishments is to be omitted by non-business persons and the instructions of the local authorities are to be followed accordingly. Compliance with the diligence required can ensure a rapid and efficient containment of the disease.
