Woman praised for swine flu actions
Posted Mon Jun 1, 2009
Northern Territory health authorities say the actions of a young Darwin woman who has swine flu reduced the chances of the disease spreading further into the Top End.
The woman caught the disease in Melbourne and flew into Darwin on Friday morning on Virgin flight DJ1457.
The Territory Health Minister, Kon Vatskalis, praised the woman's decision to see a doctor as soon as she felt ill.
"I have to say that I was very impressed the young woman did all this while wearing a face mask, which I think is fantastic and obviously people are listening the our message," he said.
The Centre for Disease Control's Dr Vicki Krause says authorities will monitor the woman, who is in quarantine for seven days, along with the three other Darwin people who she came into contact with.
"The cases that we do know about, we're using all of our facilities to try and contain the virus.
"However it is a virus that is transmissible and within the next days, I expect we will see more cases and so the situation may change."
