Sydney nurse with mystery illness dies

A Sydney nurse who became critically ill with a mystery illness has died after spending weeks in a coma.

Russell Marsh, 39, passed away three days ago, almost a month after he suddenly became sick, his sister-in-law Jasmine Nguyen confirmed.

Mr Marsh, who has a nine-year-old son Ronan, worked as a registered nurse in the emergency ward at Fairfield Hospital in Sydney?s west.

His family originally believed he had fallen ill after being coughed on by a patient at the hospital.

However, an inquiry by Fairfield Hospital into the incident found it was not linked to his illness.

?Fairfield Hospital has conducted an investigation and can confirm there is no connection between a patient for whom Mr Marsh was caring and Mr Marsh?s illness,? the hospital?s General Manager Arnold Tammekand said.

Speaking before her husband?s death, Ms Marsh said despite many tests doctors were still unsure what had made her husband so sick.

"They think it's some sort of virus but they don't know and they said there is a possibly they may never know," she said.
