Reported cases of illness from recalled ‘toxic’ spinach continue to climb
More than 200 people have now reported symptoms and suffered ‘toxic reactions’ after eating the salad staple.

The number of people needing treatment in the emergency department after eating contaminated spinach is climbing as more states and territories across the country report cases of people suffering “toxic reactions”.

As of Sunday night, at least 20 people in Victoria needed to attend the emergency department after consuming a batch of baby spinach that was found to be contaminated with an “unsafe plant material”.

Those who experience unusual or severe symptoms should report to their nearest emergency department. For more information call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
Reported symptoms after consuming the spinach can be severe and include:
  • Delirium or confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Dilated pupils
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Flushed face
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth and skin
  • Fever
