Pigeon virus 'poses no risk to people'

THE discovery of a rare but highly contagious virus which has killed pigeon flocks in Victoria does not pose a major risk to humans, experts say.
Several pigeons have died and a number of properties in northern Victoria have been quarantined amid Australia's first outbreak of avian paramyxovirus (APMV) in pigeons.
While people who handle infected birds and those with suppressed immune systems face the greatest risk of contracting APMV, it usually causes only mild flu-like symptoms or conjunctivitis.
Influenza Specialist Group chairman Alan Hampson said APMV was unlike avian influenza virus, or bird flu, which can prove fatal in humans and birds...

A rare virus that has killed hobby pigeon flocks in Victoria has now spread to racing pigeons.
Several pigeons have died and a number of properties in northern Victoria and suburban Melbourne have been quarantined amid Australia's first outbreak of avian paramyxovirus (PMV1) in pigeons.
Victoria's acting chief veterinary officer Iain McLaren said it had now been detected for the first time in racing pigeons.
Dr McLaren said until now, the outbreak had been confined to flocks of `fancy' pigeons, a domesticated variety of the bird.
Twenty-five properties in Victoria are now under quarantine, including 23 where PMV1 has been confirmed and two where it is suspected...

A DEADLY virus that swept through Victoria's pigeons earlier this year has spread to NSW, prompting urgent calls to vaccinate birds.
Laboratory tests are yet to confirm whether the paramyxovirus that has killed dozens of pigeons in Sydney racing lofts is an identical strain to the virus that killed hobby pigeons as well as feral birds in Victoria.
The outbreak has raised questions, however, about how the disease came into NSW, which has had a ban on pigeon trading from Victoria since last year...

TASMANIAN pigeon racers are on alert after the first case of the disease avian paramyxovirus in the state was confirmed in a flock in the North-West.
The infected birds came from a flock that is not associated with the Tasmanian Pigeon Racing Federation, which demands all racing pigeons are vaccinated against the virus before they can compete.
