Avian influenza virus has been confirmed at a second Victorian poultry farm.
The property is located in the Terang region and is linked to the property at Meredith where the H7N3 high pathogenicity strain of avian influenza virus has resulted in numerous poultry deaths.
Control Orders are in place restricting the movement of poultry, poultry products, equipment and vehicles on or off properties in designated areas around the two infected premises. These include:
A Restricted Area covering a 5 km radius around the Meredith farm with a broader Control Area buffer zone covering an area of 20 km.
A Restricted Area covering a 1.5 km radius around the Terang farm with a broader control Area buffer zone covering an area of 15 km.
Any suspicion of an emergency animal disease (EAD) should be immediately reported to the 24-hour EAD Hotline on 1800 675 888 or to your local vet.
Consumers should not be concerned about eggs and poultry products from the supermarkets, they do not pose a risk and are safe to consume.
While cases among humans in direct contact with animals infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses are possible, the current risk to the public remains low. Find out more about avian influenza in humans from the BetterHealth Channel.
We are responding to the detection of avian influenza at two Victorian poultry farms.
The first infected property near Meredith is confirmed to have the H7N3 strain of avian influenza and the second infected property near Terang is confirmed H7N9.
These properties have been placed in quarantine and all poultry will be safely disposed of and the sites cleared of the infection.
Diagnostic testing has confirmed the H7N9 avian influenza strain at the infected property at Terang. As a result, the restricted area has been increased to a 5 km radius around the infected property. Updated Movement Controls can be found below.
Agriculture Victoria staff are on-the-ground to supporting the businesses and working closely with industry to contain and eradicate the virus. Contact tracing is also underway to determine the source and spread of the infection.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
This is a confirmed case of H7N9 HPAI in a mixed free-ranged and caged commercial egg layer poultry farm. The farm had a commercial link with another farm infected with H7N3 HPAI, through management needs only, which was confirmed on 22 May 2024 (EVENT ID 5683). The H7N9 virus is genetically related to strains detected in wild birds in Australia. Biosecurity controls have been implemented on the farm. A detailed surveillance plan is being implemented and epidemiological investigation and tracing is underway. Operational activities have commenced. A Control Area (CA) and Restricted Area (RA) have been declared around the premises. Movement controls have been implemented in the CA and RA. A housing requirement has been implemented in the CA and RA and all poultry farmers, backyard flock and bird owners must house or keep their birds enclosed in cages or sheds. A requirement to house free-range birds where possible has been put in place. A public information strategy is being implemented. All coordinates provided are approximate to the nearest town location.
