Post-mortem examinations conducted on New Zealand fur seals found dead on a remote South Australian beach are inconclusive but may point to infection as a cause of death.
Staff at Adelaide University's vet school have today completed necropsies on the remains of three of 51 seal pups found dead on the Eyre Peninsula on Sunday, Adelaide University spokesman David Ellis said.
One adult and one juvenile were also found dead, taking the total to 53.

Rough seas are being blamed for the deaths of 62 fur seal pups in Spencer Gulf in South Australia.
They washed up on a beach on lower Eyre Peninsula recently, but the cause of death was not apparent at the time.
Deb Kelly, from the SA Environment Department, says it has now been concluded bad weather and rough seas killed the pups, which were from a colony nearby.

"These baby seal pups had sand in the trachea but no other injuries, so the only other logical conclusion is they were sitting on their rock and they got washed off and they drowned and got washed onto the mainland.
