DPI has confirmed a case of anthrax on a known infected dairy property at Stanhope.
The bull died late Thursday and the carcase was burnt the following day.
DPI senior veterinary officer George Miller said the farm had been placed under quarantine and the cattle on neighbouring properties were vaccinated over the weekend by contracted vets.
Mr Miller said the death might have been a one-off case on a property where anthrax was known to have been found before.
Vaccinations take between 10 and 14 days to take effect.
Last year 36 anthrax deaths were reported on 10 properties from the Stanhope, Tatura and Wyuna areas.
The last of three deaths were on one property at Wyuna, reported on February 23.
Last summer DPI vaccinated about 34 000 cattle.
Spores of the anthrax bacteria can lie dormant in the soil for decades and are capable of infecting animals which graze on contaminated areas.
