Measles Cases Surge in NSW, Prompting Health Warnings

Measles cases are rising sharply across New South Wales, with more than 33 cases detected this year alone. According to ABC News, health authorities express concern about the potential for undetected community infections.

In the first three months of 2026, a total of 38 cases of measles were confirmed, with five cases lacking any known source of infection. Vicky Sheppeard, director of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District’s Public Health Unit, noted that most cases are linked to returned travellers from south-east Asian countries, where significant outbreaks have been reported.

Dr. Sheppeard emphasized that the unidentified cases suggest the virus may be spreading locally, raising alarms for health officials. “In order to prevent an outbreak, we need to identify all cases and make sure that all their contacts are followed up,” she stated.​..

Residents in Sydney’s south are on alert for measles after a case was detected in the Sutherland Shire.

A traveller tested positive after returning from Southeast Asia where there is an outbreak of measles.

The person visited multiple locations across the shire while unknowingly infectious, including healthcare facilities, food outlets, shopping centres, retail stores and an auto repair shop.​..

...There have been 47 measles cases detected in NSW this year, increasing the risk of contracting the deadly disease...

A confirmed measles case has sparked a public health alert across NSW, with health authorities warning infectious exposure may have occurred at multiple healthcare and community locations.



The alert was issued after NSW Health was notified of a confirmed case in a returned traveller from South and Southeast Asia, where ongoing outbreaks of measles are being reported.

The person was infectious while visiting several sites across the state, including healthcare facilities.

NSW Health has confirmed a full list of exposure locations is published on its website and is being updated as contact tracing continues...
