Victorian father struck down by mosquito bite in Australia’s first Japanese encephalitis case in three years
‘It’s unimaginable to think how a bloody mosquito can do this to this beautiful country boy with a heart of gold.’
Demi HuangBy Demi Huang

A Victorian father has been in a coma for nearly a month after a mosquito bite, as he battles Australia’s first reported case of Japanese encephalitis in three years.

Stephen Bond, who had been working in the NSW town of Finley near the Murray River, began experiencing headache and fever symptoms in early December last year, shortly after turning 60.

His wife, Cilla, took him to Shepparton Hospital in northern Victoria, but his condition deteriorated so rapidly over the next few days that he was airlifted to St Vincent’s ICU in Melbourne in a critical condition.

It has been confirmed that the father of three contracted Japanese encephalitis, a potentially deadly virus transmitted through mosquito bites...

Two cases of mosquito-borne diseases have been recorded in a Queensland city, with authorities confirming one person has ended up in hospital.

Townsville Public Health Unit said on Friday that one person had tested positive for the rare Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and another for dengue virus.

The individual with JEV is receiving treatment in Townsville University Hospital.

Their infection - the first case of JEV recorded in Townsville - was most likely acquired outside of the regional city, TPHU Director Dr Steven Donohue said.

"It is very unlikely the patient got the disease here as they had been holidaying in southern Queensland where the virus has been present," Dr Donohue said....

The potentially deadly Japanese encephalitis virus has been found in mosquitoes in Brisbane for the first time, triggering warnings to Queenslanders to be extra vigilant against getting bitten.

Queensland Health said routine mosquito surveillance programs had detected the presence of the virus in Hemmant, an eastern riverside suburb of Brisbane.

The department is concerned the risk of human exposure to Queenslanders may increase after recent flooding following ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Chief Health Officer Heidi Carroll said Queenslanders should be extra cautious against being bitten by mosquitoes across the state, no matter where they lived...

Bowen man likely died from Japanese encephalitis but local exposure uncertain
By Danielle Jesser

Queensland has recorded its first probable death from the mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) since 2022.

Mackay Hospital and Health Services said a man from Bowen was being treated at Mackay Base Hospital last week, but later died.

A health service spokesperson said it was difficult to determine where the man contracted the virus as he travelled extensively for work.

The spokesperson said the "probable" diagnosis was based on the man's antibody response to the infection.

They said a definitive diagnosis would have required further testing which was now not possible due to his death.

It is the third diagnosed case of JEV in Queensland this year, and only the second likely and reported death in Queensland...
