Mosquito mayhem: Dengue danger in Cairns and Far North Queensland after Cyclone Ita

NEW clusters of dengue fever cases have been detected at Cairns North and Woree amid fears of more outbreaks in the wake of cyclone Ita.

Five new cases were confirmed by Queensland Health on Thursday, raising the number of infections in the region to 130 since October.

Health officials are urging all Far North residents to increase their mosquito vigilance over the Easter period, as knock-on effects from cyclone Ita cause increased risks.

With the Easter holiday period traditionally causing an increase in outdoor activities, there are worries more people could be exposed to dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

FACT SHEET: DENGUE FEVER
A dengue fever outbreak in Charters Towers has been
declared by Queensland Health.


By definition an outbreak is one or more cases of Dengue Fever that has been transmitted locally. As at
12:00pm 23 April 2014, we have 2 confirmed cases of Dengue Fever and 3 more probable. It has been
21 years since the last declaration in Charters Towers, so now is a good time to remind people to be
vigilant. Look after yourself and your family, tip water out, store items that may hold water undercover
and throw out rubbish that is laying around. Warn other people, use repellents if necessary, ensure
window and door screens are in good condition etc.

As a result of the declaration, Qld Health have been sending Dengue response teams from Townsville to
assist in the containment of the outbreak. As part of the response, Qld Health staff may place small
Dengue buckets at the properties they visit. The strips inside the buckets contain enough pesticide to kill
a mosquito but nothing else. The strip also prevents the mosquito eggs from hatching. The buckets will
be collected in approximately 4 weeks.

Thirty-five cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in north Queensland, with health authorities investigating another seven probable cases.

Public health physician Stephen Donohue said 18 cases were from inner-residential areas in Charters Towers, while the other 17 were from Townsville...

Four Territorians return from Bali holiday with dengue fever

FOUR cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in the Territory in the past week in people infected while in Bali, the NT Centre for Disease Control has said.

CDC director Dr Vicki Krause said people travelling in South East Asia generally, needed to be careful about disease-carrying mosquitoes, especially those transmitting the dengue fever virus, which bite during daytime and live around urban areas.

The Territory is free from Aedes aegypti mosquitoes which carry dengue...
