AN EARLY rise in the number of cases of mosquito-borne disease on the Fraser Coast has medical experts warning people to take extra precautions against the bloodsucking pests.

Nine people have tested positive to Ross River virus or Barmah Forest virus since the start of the year - and the mozzie season has only just begun...

The Murrumbidgee Local Health District says mosquito borne diseases are down compared to last summer...

...Director of Public Health, Tracey Oakman says the district has had 12 cases of Ross River virus and six cases of Barmah Forest Virus so far this year but in March and April the number of cases could peak...

Ross River cases high in area usually dry

Most West Australians would probably associate Ross River virus with the wetter, or more tropical parts of the state, but it is the usually dry Goldfields that has seen a spike in the virus.

In the Goldfields region there have been at least 70 reported cases of the virus passed on by mosquitoes since July, compared to 29 cases in the 12 months prior.

Of the 70 cases, 60 were recorded between last month and this week.

The Department of Health's managing scientist of environmental health Mike Lindsay said such spikes usually followed unusually heavy rainfall associated with weather systems that followed cyclonic activity...

...Across the state the number of cases of Ross River virus is down from those recorded in the 2011-12 financial year.

From July, 860 cases have been recorded while 1547 were recorded in the 12 months prior...

MEDICAL experts warn the state's north is on the brink of a new mosquito-borne virus outbreak.

Queensland's shadow treasurer Curtis Pitt yesterday confirmed he had tested positive to the debilitating Ross River virus, ahead of the release of today's State Budget.

His is the latest case of 906 people state-wide to contract the illness this year, as latest figures show a spike in other mosquito-borne viruses including dengue fever and Barmah Forest virus compared with the same time last year...

WA mosquito warning over Ross River virus

People in Western Australia's South West region are being warned to avoid mosquito bites after this season's first detection of Ross River virus in the insects.

The Health Department says its mosquito and virus surveillance program has detected the virus at coastal mosquito breeding sites in the region...

Five cases of Ross River Fever

Hunter New England Health has confirmed five cases of the mosquito-borne virus Ross River Fever in the past month in an area that stretches from Maitland to Murrurundi and up to the state?s north-west.

A further five cases of Barmah Forrest infection were confirmed yet there has been only one confirmed case of Ross River Virus in the Hunter Valley.
