Wesley to remain in lockdown after legionnaires' outbreak

A major Brisbane hospital will remain in lockdown for at least another week, with all admissions cancelled and surgeries suspended after a deadly outbreak of legionnaires' disease.
A 60-year-old man died and a 46-year-old woman remains in intensive care after they contracted legionnaires' disease at the Wesley Hospital.
Legionella bacteria was found in the taps of a room in the hospital?s east wing where the 60-year-old cancer patient contracted the disease more than a week ago and died last Sunday.

The hospital's entire water system is now being flushed out with boiling water in a bid to kill the legionella bacteria and will also be treated with a cocktail of chemicals.
??It?s the hot water system we?re focused on," UnitingCare Health chief executive Richard Royle said.

A strain of legionella bacteria that killed a patient at a Brisbane hospital has been found in 17 other Queensland health facilities.
Tests show legionella pneumophila was found in wards of the seriously ill, such as cancer patients, in at least two facilities.
They were the Gold Coast and Ipswich public hospitals.
Another major Brisbane hospital, QEII Jubilee Hospital tested positive to that strain but it's unclear if it was found in wards of vulnerable patients...
