HEALTH officials fear an explosion of dengue fever is imminent in Cairns after a second incidence of the virus in an inner-city suburb.

Two confirmed cases of the mosquito-transmitted disease yesterday took the city's dengue tally to seven but doctors believe four pending cases will return positive.

A Whitfield woman has contracted the type-1 strain while two other people who live in the same household are suspected carriers.

Late yesterday, a Kewarra Beach man who had spent Christmas in the same Whitfield neighbourhood was confirmed as the latest victim.

Five cases of the type-3 strain already have been recorded at Mt Sheridan but Queensland Health public health physician Dr Richard Gair said the latest outbreak was from a new source...

Healthy populations of the Aedes aegypti mosquito have increased the likelihood that the city's dengue fever toll will rise quickly over the next few weeks.

Five new cases were confirmed over the weekend at Whitfield, the source of the latest outbreak, taking the number of confirmed cases to 12...

PEST controllers are set to be flown in to Cairns to help health officials contain the rapidly rising dengue fever toll, which has more than tripled in the past week.

Twenty cases have been confirmed but public doctors say several blood tests being analysed at pathology laboratories are expected to increase that number.

The latest outbreak at Whitfield is of most concern, with cases rising from seven to 13 in a day.

AUTHORITIES say a proactive approach by mosquito-minded residents may have helped curb the number of dengue virus cases.

There were no reported cases yesterday as Cairns Regional Council workers joined the Dengue Action Response Team in Whitfield, Edge Hill and Manoora...

WA had a record 531 cases of dengue fever last year - more than any other State - and three-quarters of them were contracted in Bali.

A sharp rise in Australian cases of the mosquito-borne viral infection, fuelled mostly by West Australians holidaying in Indonesia, has raised fears of more local transmission and the infection becoming endemic in Queensland.

A WA Health Department spokesman said yesterday that 79 per cent of last year's record WA dengue fever cases were from Indonesia, almost all contracted in Bali.

It topped the previous high of 508 cases in 2010.

"Reflecting the large numbers of West Australians who travel to Bali, more cases of dengue fever have been reported in WA in each of the past three years than in any other Australian State or Territory, including Queensland which is the only part of Australia where there is local transmission of dengue virus," the spokesman said...

TWO Port Douglas residents have been diagnosed with dengue fever as the outbreak continues to spread across the Far North.

Queensland Health confirmed the two cases today and said there were a further three residents who were also suspected of having contracted it...

Pecten declared 'Dengue Zone'

Following confirmation from Queensland Health that two cases of dengue fever have been identified in Port Douglas, Cairns Regional Council is urging residents not to lower their guard in defending against the mosquito-borne disease.

As at noon yesterday, a total of 64 cases had been confirmed within the Cairns region, and 'Dengue Zone' signs had been erected at Pecten Avenue in Four Mile while Council inspected and sprayed properties...

The Cairns Public Health Unit says the spread of dengue fever in the city still looks to be slowing, despite an outbreak of another strain.

At least two people have been infected with type-two dengue in the Edge Hill area, where the type-one strain has affected more than 60 people...

...According to Queensland Health, the dengue cases confirmed in Port Douglas is Type 1 dengue and is highly likely to be linked to the Cairns outbreak of Type 1 dengue which began in December 2012...

HEALTH authorities are battling four separate outbreaks of dengue fever in far north Queensland.

More than 80 people have been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne virus in Cairns and Port Douglas since December.

Three outbreaks have been reported in Cairns and another in Port Douglas.

Tropical Public Health Services director Richard Gair said dengue outbreaks began with sick travellers carrying the virus into Australia from a tropical country, particularly Bali, Thailand, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.

He called on residents, visitors and returning travellers to see a doctor if they were feeling unwell, as they "could be the source of a new outbreak of dengue"...
