Re: Victoria, AU: Department investigates possible (MVE) encephalitis death

WARNINGS over the deadly Murray Valley encephalitis virus have been escalated after a man's death.
Tests on his body were negative for MVE, but before his death he was exhibiting signs of the deadly mosquito-borne virus.

The virus was detected late last month in sentinel chickens at Mildura, Robinvale, Kerang, Barmah and Tooleybuc.

Health department spokesman Bram Alexander said the man's doctors believed the virus may have been involved. "We know he died with a severe encephalitis-type illness," Mr Alexander said.

Mosquitoes spread Murray Valley encephalitis Marianne Betts From: Herald Sun March 24, 2011 11:19AM

NEW detections of the Murray Valley encephalitis in chickens has prompted a fresh warning from health authorities for Victorians to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
Victoria's chief health officer, Dr John Carnie, said the deadly disease had been detected in "sentinel" chickens at Cobram, Rutherglen, Toolamba and Bendigo.

"These latest detections follow positive results in chickens in similar areas a month ago, including Barmah and Kerang," Dr Carnie said. "Evidence of the virus is again present in these areas."

The disease, carried by birds and passed to humans by mosquitoes, kills one in five of those infected, while half of survivors suffer brain damage.

While there had still been no confirmed cases of the virus in humans, a northwest Victorian man died of a suspected case of Murray Valley encephalitis this month

NSW Health has confirmed that a resident of north western NSW has been diagnosed with a recent infection of Murray Valley Encephalitis or MVE.

The locally acquired case, a woman in her sixties, became unwell in early March with symptoms including headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. She was hospitalised but has now been discharged and is recovering. This case follows one confirmed case in South Australia this week.

No human cases of MVE have been detected since 2008 in NSW when a case of MVE infection was detected in a person who lived near Macquarie Marshes, who recovered.

ONE person has died and several others are ill across the northern and central regions of Western Australia after contracting a virus associated with mosquito bites.
The WA Department of Health says six people have been diagnosed with Murray Valley encephalitis, a serious inflammation of the brain, and is warning people travelling anywhere north or east of Perth to be vigilant.

Seven months ago, Halls Creek Constable Ryan Marron, 30, was fit, happy, healthy and facing a bright future with his fianc? Toni Misitano ? but one mosquito bite changed everything.

Struck down with the deadly brain virus, Murray Valley Encephalitis, in the Balgo Aboriginal Community in April, the officer was rushed to a Perth hospital in an induced coma with grim prospects for survival.

Miraculously, he pulled through and was released from Shenton Park Rehabilitation Centre into the care of his family a week ago after months of acute neurological care and recovery.

However, his life will never be the same.

Const. Marron remains in a semi-catatonic state most of the time with no use of his fine motor skills. His mind is still active, but he is unable to communicate and reliant on carers and is unable to walk, feed or dress himself.

Appeal to help sick policeman
Georgia Loney, The West Australian

The family of a stricken policeman left unable to walk and talk from a rare disease contracted at a remote outpost say they feel he has been abandoned by the State Government.

Ryan Marron, 29, needs 24-hour care after being stricken by mosquito-borne Murray Valley Encephalitis doing relief work at the Balgo community in the Kimberley last April.

His partner, fellow police officer Toni Misitano, 24, wants the State Government to help pay to take Const. Marron to the Chicago Institute of Rehabilitation, for what she hopes is his best chance at recovery.
