EXTRA Queensland Health staff will be deployed to the Torres Strait next week after six teachers tested positive for tuberculosis.

They will offer screening and assessment for the highly contagious disease to students and staff at the Saibai Island campus of Tagai State College, about 900km northwest of Cairns, as health authorities try to ease community concern.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service chief executive Dr Jill Newland said the six cases of non-infectious latent TB were diagnosed by specialist medical assessment following contact tracing and screening of the close contacts of a single confirmed case of TB identified at the school in March...
