Virus a threat to Gold Coast kids

GOLD Coast health authorities are battling a break-out of a virus that attacks the respiratory system of young children.
It has prompted Griffith University researchers to use a $500,000 boost in funding to help find a cure.
Professor Suresh Mahalingham and his Institute for Glycomics team will study the relatively new human metapneumovirus (hMPV) and how its infection can trigger asthma, particularly in children.
There have been 73 positive hMPV tests in both adults and children on the Coast in the past year, but doctors say the figure could be higher because not all patients were tested....
